Military Service: Requirements and benefits

Jul 08, 2022 Sid123 link
Currently, you can join the military of a nation and not serve one skirmish, and there are no penalties. You may be KoS with the nation whose military you joined, but you remain in their military and can't join the opposition. Both for immersion and to not lock people in in one particular military for all eternity, the following suggestion:

While punishing lack of service, the system should also reward devoted military service. So,

Military Promotions System

Basically, an additional "Military XP" scale on the licences page. You gain XP and advance through military ranks as you do skirmishes, and lose rank through inactivity in the military. The longer you stay AWOL, the faster you lose XP. Ranks, XP req. and perks:

Lieutenant: Beginner rank, don't get free ship replacement on being killed in service.

Captain: 1000 XP to reach, get free ship replacement when killed in service (credits only).

Major: 5000 XP (after Captain; not total), get free ship replacement when killed and 50% subsidized crystals when killed in service, can command a single NPC fighter during the mission. The wingman will not follow you outside Deneb (or the Geira-Deneb wormhole if you're Serco).

Lieutenant Colonel: 15,000 XP (as before), get ship replacement with 100% subsidized crystals, command 3 NPC fighters. T&C as above.

Colonel: 50,000 XP, ship replacement, command 1 Trident Light Frigate or 6 NPC fighters. You cannot fly the Trident, only give it orders.

Brigadier: 100,000 XP, ship replacement, command 2 Trident Light Frigates or 10 NPC fighters. T&C as above.

Major General: 200,000 XP, ship replacement, command all fighters in any skirmish (not capships) and call for reinforcement at personal cost.*

Lieutenant General: 500,000 XP, ship replacement, other perks as for Major General, get to fly the TPG Teradon in any skirmish where it is present. A docking bay will open specially for you in the ship if you have the rank. You will be kicked out with your ship once the skirmish is over.

General: 1,000,000 XP, all other perks same as Lieutenant General, get to fly the Heavy Assault Cruiser in any skirmish where it is present. T&C as above.

Field Marshal: Command ALL NPCs of your nation in a skirmish, able to allocate them into completely customisable Alpha, Beta, Gamma etc divisions which can each be issued seperate commands.

Fighter Skirmishes give 100 XP, Medium Skirmishes give 500 XP, and large Skirmishes give 1000 XP when won while you're in the mission and in the sector where they occurred.

*Personal cost for reinforcements: 100,000c for an additional low-grade fighter (IBG or SVG), 500,000c for a high-grade fighter (IDF Valk or SSCP), and 2 million credits for a Trident Light Frigate. This would provide a nice credit sink for the huge banks of those very enthusiastic to win Deneb through any means possible.

Service Requirement: Win atleast one skirmish of any size in any given 48-hour in-game active period. Not doing so for 48 hours will result in a loss of 500 XP, with the loss increasing by 10% (compounded) for every 6 hours of additional non-service. After all XP and rank is lost, you are allowed to lose 1000 XP in negative before being kicked from the military, resulting in loss of 100 standing points. This discourages "casually" joining a military. If you're joining it, serve, or get kicked out.

So you're going with a space force instead of a space navy?

Uh...right I took the rank names from the wrong source...point is the perks and the punishment. The names can be anything.

Just to point out, Incarnate has had big plans for military participation and conflict for a long time. Obviously, this keeps getting pushed back for one reason or another.

There have been multiple threads over the years where Incarnate has laid out some of the details for this, but this may be the oldest.

It's still good to bring these things up again, though.

Everything is good, except it ignores the MMO part in MMORPG. What happens when players of different ranks join a group?

The powers remain the same, unless the number or NPCs is insufficient for both to fill their command slots. Then the player with higher XP in their given rank will take precedence. When it comes to giving orders to players, it's obviously how they handle it. The rank system would only affect NPC control.
