Capital Ship Combat

Hopefully, player owned capital ships will make it into the game at some point. When this happens, it will take the gameplay to a whole new level. As of now all characters are basically fighter pilots, flying light fighters, bombers, and transports. To win in combat, a character must rely on reflexes, dexterity, and teamwork. This is all good, but when true capital ships come into play I hope it will add a whole new dimension to combat; planning and strategy.

Capital ships are much larger and much less maneuverable than fighters, so piloting one will take some planning ahead. Whereas in a fighter combat is more "point and shoot", capital ships may have blind spots and broadsides that force a cap ship pilot to carefully take into consideration how he orients his ship. If a capital ship was armed with a deck of heavy guns that took a full minute to reload, it could take several minutes of maneuvering before getting into a position to deliver a crippling broadside. All the while during these maneuvers, both captains would be watching each other's movements, trying to second guess their opponent. With fighters there are already some of these elements, but usually there isn't enough time to think, only to react. It is my hope that when it comes to capital ships, winning a fight will require a captain to think minutes ahead of the game, use the environment to his full advantage as well as the geometry of his and his oppoenent's ship.

I can't think of a space combat sim that has done this successfully, it's mostly just "the bigger, stronger cap ship moves in and wins." I hope that when Vendetta's cap ships roll around, the single most important factor in determining victory will be strategy.

Like in the old Burning Steel series with battle ships from WWII? That would be cool. Also how will the cannons be aimed? Will you be able to hire other players to shoot them?

It's better you did'nt start fanticizing cap ships.

they are due to be released only as an update for the game after it goes "pay to play"...

Really? Hm, I not so sure then, if I'd like to pay for it later. Capital ships are one of the main aspects of such games, that bring must fun into gameplay. I understand, if they are not yet implemented, but even not in final game?? That sounds a lot more boring now... always thought, it's just a question of time.

My wishes for a capital ship:

It could need a crew:
captain, (pilot extra?), different gunners, maybe also mechanics and other stuff?
And it should be able to dock smaller ships, and to have the pilots on board then, like in a station.

And with global chat terminated, people chat with people on the cap ship. And of course it needs a way for passengers to look out of the ship (maybe only front, or from different windows would be more fun.)
And capital ship has a comm, which can be used from everyone, where you can talk to other ships (in sector) via radio equipment.
And of course it also can have a global thingy onboard. (high energy and/or cost intensive call to a person outside the sector)

So if someone attacks a capital ship, the pilot can keep the direction, and the 5 gun turrets fire the enemy ship, and in addition the docked ships could swarm out.
And when you are on a capital ship, you can have a bar Tab, to talk to people and a outside view Tab, where you have different views of the outside (or maybe even a window in the bar, or a screen to switch through the outside views, this would be fun for stations too, or just a simple small screen that always shows front view in all tabs)!
And there could even be some amusement features on capital ships, like sub games (card games, etc.), training computers, story tellings NPCs, Intercom, Newsboard, blackboard, a dealer for selling/buying stuff, machine rooms for reapirs, whatever. (could be on stations too)

Is something like that (more simplifed for the beginning of course) planned? or any othe multiply crew features for cap ships? I think they can be a lot like stations.

It would also be fine, if someone or teams, nations can build and/or buy stations (or take them over), own and run them. Stations could be destroyable too. (very, very hard, and a need of lots of small fighters and some big ones) So stations can feature turrents too, and all the capital ship stuff.
Also fine would be small ships with a crew of 2-3 persons (pilot, 2 gunners), and a possibilty of passangers (maybe you could need passanger cells then, like in Frontier - Elite II, of different luxoriosity), they can just look outside (same view possibilities as pilot) and are hooked up with the pilot in chat. Then you could play taxi too. (also via NPC mission).

Also there could be human driven missions, so you set up a mission, and put it on the mission computer for a fee, so you can hire people and such, and payment, experience etc. could be handled autimatically and fine.

Also possible landing sites on planets, etc. would be GREAT!

For global chat, I would say:
Normal chat should be just absolutelly locally. I mean on the actual station, ship or capital ship. Then there should be radio transmitted near range (sector-) chat (free broadcast as standard), and hig range, maybe via hyperspace and high energy using (uses battery), and only to single persons, or a more expensive broadcast function. It could either use high energy or cost some money (like the telephone now does, so broadcast is more expensive, except emergency calls). If it's high energy, it could be made long only on station (they have big solar panels and high energy storages), or in the ship only short with the use of the battery.
What do you think about that? How is it planned? One message per minute sounds a little other and not so realistic, but don't know what you are planning exactly.

Thanks and greetings,

We've discussed capital ships to death, stuepfnick. I'm sorry if noone seems interested in taking about them now, but you are way on the end of this conversation.

Literally everything in your post has been discussed to death. All I can say is read the links to the left and go back through the older threads in the forum to get detailed rebuttals/answers/confirmations/hints/suggestions/refinements/etc.
