Volume of weapons

Nov 29, 2004 Shapenaji link
I've seen that weapons, theoretically, have volumes right now (all 1 cu it looks like), but I haven't actually noticed them being used. I think it would interesting if these weapons actually used space.

this would make the 2 cu of the IDF valk difficult to use, and a nice drawback to the ultralight versions, they simply couldn't run the same weapons.

for example, suppose gausses are made lighter, suppose 600 kg, but they have a volume of 2 cu. If a serco vult were to run one, they wouldn't be able to run any other weapons, and they couldn't pick up cargo. This would make the biocom vult (with its 3 cu, a very weird faction variant, in that it is just unilaterally worse than all the others) actually useful!.

Heavy weps would also use up much more cargo space, but could be lighter, a rack of swarms might take 10+ cu, making a swarm spammer very bad at picking up cargo, and would limit the spam ability of rags (perhaps if the volume is set to have the rag be able to carry 2) since they would then not be able to run anything in their other weapon slots.

It seems like the functionality already exists. And maybe its already in the works.

(how neat would it be to have a neut III's take up 2 cu? any regular valk would only be able to carry 2)

Ideas?

I think the weapon ports are voids in the outer hull of the ship where one could never place cargo, so I see the volume of the weapons as unrelated to cargo space. I think the port size addresses the question of how to limit weapon choice, though another suggestion might be to make a "medium" port as has been discussed in the past.

If anything I could see leaving out weapons to ADD cargo space, like a really profit hungry trader clamping a box here and there, though that's a bit silly.

hmm, but if you consider that any weapon must have a series of necessary systems inside the ship, an accelerator, whatever, it kinda makes sense.

For a plasma dev, for example, you might need a fuel scoop to pick up interstellar hydrogen, and a storage tank/"heater" to ionize it.
Then the actual gun would be the accelerator.

There might be some guns which had stuff tacked on the outside, but it seems that there are a fair number of weps which would require backup systems.

i remember the suggestion for a medium port. Think it could be done quickly enough to be done by christmas? Im sure plenty of players have an idea for the stats on the different medium guns and such

i would rather see them work on other things. not that its a bad idea, its just that there are a lot cooler things to do and they have to prioritize and make a decision on what to leave out. its not a 'simple thing' to do something like add a medium slot. it could take days of work. it could totally throw off the game balance. not to mention the required artwork and bug testing and manual rewriting and new weapons-configurator code, new decisions to make about which weapons/items can go in which slots, which ships to get what, and etc etc etc.

I think weapon volumes will come into play when they implement carrying weapons as cargo sometime in the future.
