Sector to Sector travel

>Once your ship reaches 50,000m from the system center, no animation happens, it just loads the next sector in that direction like you warped into it, and dumps you at 45,000m out again. You're responsible for getting in to the center. This would remove the isolation from the sectors, and although it's not practical to fly from sector to sector, it's good to know that you can.<

I really like this idea, and it really does not seem that hard to implement. Would also add a lot to game play in my opinion, could add to sneakier trade routes, pirate traps, and many other new and interesting situations.

I do like the idea...
And would really enjoy seeing it...

However, I think ther would be allot of development involved... The time waiting to load the next sector is relatively substantial, if you consider trying to make it so you can transition between sectors without seeing a loading screen...

To do this;

I would think there would need to be an indication of which sector you are heading towards... (then what happens with Edge of map sectors?)

The most difficult thing, IMO, would be managing the global background picture. The easiest thing would be to try and fade between the two background pictures at the 50,000m (or whatever) mark. Leaving enough distance/time to unload the 3D objects from the previous sector and load the 3d objects from the new sector.

_IF_ that were accomplished, you would still see strange things happening to the background during the transition.. Unless there was some way to re-render ALL of the artwork for the entire game to allow more pleasing transitions...

Like I said earlier... I would really enjoy this feature (and Eye Candy) if it were to be implimented... But I doubt it's coming soon...

Of course I've been worng plenty of times before too.. ;-)

Was not implied that it would be seamless, but that the load would just happen like normal and then you are in the next sector, no jump animation.

What happens if you go 'up'?

Then I would refer you to this link -> http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/3/8196 about how the system maps should be in 3d

But, you could think of a sector as four quadrents of a sphere, if you reach 50,000m and were on the left you go left and if it were right you go right, forward is forward, back is back. And if your dead on, it's a random chance of either way.

So, would this come before or after walking on stations, landing on planets and undersea exploration?

Ahhh.. I see now...

Well yeah, gotta have the load screen, but that sounds like it wouldn't be too much trouble then... (as much anyway)

And the Up down thing... would just have to impliment nav points like worm hole nav points....

I think I saw some older version screen shots where neighboring sector nav points were implimented...

So, the jump would actually be a jump over allot of empty space... Which might mean that "jump drives" could be introduced as an add-on for lower level ships, and a built in luxury in higher models... since traveling between sectors wouldn't require jumping.

And, the nav points would be distracting for some folks, so they should be toggleable...

Right after you remove the stick genka!!

I don't see this as much in the way of coding. But, some time within the next 6months is reasonable I think.

Genka's "up" point is valid. You can navigate by looking at planets and the sun, I guess, but if someone decides to just go perpindicular to the plane of the map you've got a situation. Or if you're in a corner sector and try to fly off the map.

my words don't do me justice here but I'll give this another shot. Think of each sector as an orange, if you were to divide your "orange" into 4 parts you would have wedges. Each wedge is attached to a corrisponding sector, it doesn't matter if you head strait or up/down, or backwards. Unless you hit the exact point where all the wedges meet at the top you would hit 1 of the 4 sectors, and if you did hit that exact point, just generate a random number 1-4 to deside which sector to zone to. Does that make sense?

Mind you, this is not to replace just going 3000m out and jumping to the next sector, just a different way to go about moving from sector to sector, the slow way.

What if you're in a corner sector and try to fly off the map?

Hmmm... -Enter "Exploration" discussion. ??

then you just keep flying in sector until a time that the devs deem us worthy of an exploration expansion. =)
