Lylat Wars/Wing Commander style chat!

i really like some of the quotes people are suggesting - there are so many great ones that could be recorded, with different F keys for phrases to friendly ships and enemy ships. there should be a range of different voice styles to select for each team, but with an entirely different manner of speaking and set of quotes for other teams. it would be brilliant to hear an itani ally contacting me in a friendly tone, then enter less welcoming territory and hear the voice of an gruff, intimidating serco pilot warning of his antagonistic presence closing in on my ship!

the clip of the pilot in his craft should work similarly i think, but do we imagine that all these pilots are human? (thats the conclusion i came to so im not saying its a bad thing if they are) i was just thinking that if people do not want their character portrayed as any of the preset appearances, perhaps there could be other images available for selection that were more generic such as the person's ship or the name of their faction.

it would also be important that these incoming transmissions looked impressive but did not take up too much of the screen as i wouldnt want this to spoil the nice uncluttered interface during flight.

as far as us coding it goes, that would be an interesting idea but i unfortunately know fairly little code so couldnt be of much help. i know a reasonable amount in the linux bash shell and about the OS in general though. im not sure if this idea would look professional unless we leave this to the devs though... =S

You're right, the devs could definitely integrate it with the rest of the game & make it more professional than we can, but here's the main arguments I have for having us do it. First and foremost, there's only four devs. And they have a LOT they want to do on the game, and that all of the players really want to see. Their time is precious. Second, while we of course can't do it as well as could, I really think we could do a very nice job. One and two together, if we can do it without needing to use any of the devs time, we'll be able to see this a lot sooner. Another thing, is there's enough players on dial-up, who may not want to spend the time downloading all the audio files. If the devs did it, and integrated it tightly with the game (with animations & such), then either the dial-up players would be stuck spending a long time downloading, or else the devs would need to maintain two packages, which could take even more of thier time. One last thing, is the devs are on a very limited budget. For it to truly be professional, it would need professional voice actors, who would need to be paid. Again, I think we could definitely do a good job, most of us aren't professional voice actors, and I think it would show. So if we're going to be volunteering as voice actors, I'd rather have it be done as a community project, which would look cool, rather than be an official part of the game, where critics would judge it on a professional level - "Yeah, VO's a great game, but its voice acting really isn't all that hot."

i agree with beo, i the devs would make it awesome but it would be judged, were if it were a mod, we could do as we wish.

although, if the devs provided the code and interface, and told us what to label for the audio and where to put it, we could make a download page where people can download DIFFERENT voice selection to there own liking. I personally don't want to be yelled at by a Serco as he is saying hello

so...if f5 where the agreements and (it would be like a folder. were the folder name is f5 and in each folder is more folder ranging from 1-0

(sorry if this is a little hard to follow, just woke up a moment ago.

f5-agreements
1-Yes
2-No
3-Roger
4-There's a Problem there
5-i can't get there
6-Already there
7-RACE YOU!
8-Not if i rip your liver out first!
9-i copy
0-i can't do that

f6
1-i need back up
2-I'm under attack

and so on and so forth. then we could download and voice we want said. only we would here it, and for those who don't have a voice for that it could just throw text. we could even make it choose a random file thin the last folder so that the voice changes, and Maybe the saying changes sometime to.

so say the download pages would have the groups. UIT, SERCO, ITANI, and last but not least PIRATE,

and in each section there are voices for each button. that would give the people with dial up a chance to download all the voices (and those mac users with speed download 2, would just have to let it download the playlist overnight) and wala.

well, maybe we could get people to submit graphics for the character animation, suggestions for itani, UIT and serco phrases and their own recorded voice samples? then, whether its released as a mod, an integrated part of the game or a seperately downloadable (free!!) expansion set by the developers, we will still be offering some help and ideas towards it. perhaps people could even come up with suggestions about how the whole transmission interface would look in-game, in flash or an image editing program. then ultimately we could all vote on particular layouts, animations, phrases and voice styles to decide on what we think we want it to do. what do u think?

and its not wala its voila (its french) =)

C'mon, AppleScript dabblers...come up with a script to read the errors.log from Console and use Voices to say the lines from your guildmates, giving them each a descriptive voice!

Concerning audio snippets, look at Descent3's "Audio Taunt" feature. It was a riot during combat!

I'm am truly sorry darksmiley, when i woke up at 4PM, i was not thinking, mm, i wonder of "voila" is spelled ;)
lol, sorry, little testy this early in the morning.

for the applescripter guy, here

http://bbs.applescript.net/viewforum.php?f=2&sid=2a276450fbe51165164a1d5227e5a24a

you get them to answer your post, but remember it needs to be for OSX, LINIX, and *shuter* windows.

and as dark also said, i was thinking, if the devs respond to this and say, "yah sure, well put the coding in if you provide the voice/images" the i could make a website that had 4 main sections

SERCO
UIT
ITANI
PIRATE

under each section would be this subsection

VOICE
PORTRAITS

then under voice we would have all the f keys and such, with instructions on Downloading them.

i have a picture of the folder structure i was thinking of but i have no way of posting it, if someone would give me a location i can post it then i will.

and as for the flash thing, i had an idea, and will do it post haste. if you want to see that i will need an e-mail or something to send it to (because i have but dial-up)

/edit
e-mail me at gagihia@hotmail.com for any picts/flash things.

Oh, one last thing, if we get a dev to say ANYTHING, we should bring it to the community project forum.

Back when I was playing ActionQuake 2 there was a cool system.
Rather than the voicebinds saying complete sentences they were just a few words and numbers.

I had E bound to "say 10;wait;wait;say 4" or something like that.
That, ofcourse, makes me say "Ten four".

"say i;say go;say left" - "I go left"
It dosn't even have to be in correct grammar. It just needs to be understandable.

Words needed, imo, would be: I, need, enemy, spotted, ship, target, attack, defend, help, run, close, away, that...

stuff like that.

"I need target", "Defend target", "enemy ship spotted", "enemy close"
The amount of meaningful sentences to be formed with those words alone is great and, like I said, we don't need perfect grammar.
The lack of perfect grammar is even positive as it maked a "vendetta sentance" recognizable.

...and The great Serco leader said "I spot enemy ship close. attack."

Dig?

lol at that last comment!! i discovered something very funny recently related to serco that i will put in the general forum soon and u have to all check it out =)

but yea i think knight of order's idea is along the right lines, because whether we agree or disagree on the way the idea is going to be coded and who by etc, this will still be good progress.

your idea is ok demonen, but i dont really know if it would allow for intimidating transmissions from enemy ships as its merely functional. its certainly worth considering though, depending on how its implemented i guess.

i reckon we should all get making example phrases for the three teams (different for each team, and different phrases for friendly ships and enemy), voice samples and animations! the voice samples or animations could be of anything at this point - it would just be nice to see who has talent!! lol

should i give my email for people to send them to then i could put them on my website www.theinformationleak.com (its a conspiracy site but i would make a new vendetta section) and send them to knights of order for his site too? what's the best idea?
Jan 11, 2005 Demonen link
The two methods are not mutually exclusive.
/sendsample 24,1,.2 - plays sample number 24 (Serco voice 2 saying "You are so dead!"), offset 1 second, play .2 seconds, rendering something like "so"

Doable? Indeed.
If I just want to use "You are so dead!" I'll just /sendsample 24
Geddit?

Personally, I think pieced together audio bits like that wouldn't sound that great, and would be a bit tougher to program for. But Demonen's right, they aren't mutually exclusive, we could have a combination of full audio clips, single word audio clips to piece together, and text-to-speech as well.

As far as who implements it, why don't we just get started doing it as a community project, and if the devs want to get involved we'll have the media ready to give them?
Jan 11, 2005 Knight_Of_Order link
YES, In-fact to day at 9:00 am my time (11 dev time) -11 my time 1:00 dev time. i will be getting cable modem installed. after that i will set up a site (or try to) and we'll see from there on.

LOOK in http://www.vendetta-online.com/x/msgboard/9/8567#98997

for the Community project, i think we should move there now because the suggestion is out. we could work on both ideas for now and when we have a rudimentary plan laid out, and maybe a beta we could vote on the best idea, (or just implement both of them. (making you switch manually)

ok, im going to chat in the other one as well but just in case this suggestion hasnt been fully acknowledged by the developers, im gonna bump it! =)
