Directional Guidance

Feb 03, 2005 retromac link
I was wondering something about the gameplay? Hopefully I’m in the right area.

It seems to me that there should be some sort of directional guidance system set up or key jumping area.

If you are wanting to jump to another sector and you are pointing in the wrong direction, wouldn't you end up in another sector by accident?

If the navigation system simply compansates for this and moves you around, then disregard this post.

But I was thinking it would make it more interesting that if you were in regular space, you would at least have to be point in the general direction or area to jump. (something similar to a wormhole jump, but way larger)

or at least be in a ray of the direction, less then 180, say like 80 degrees, 40 degrees off either side, since the universe is flat.

"Within a given solar system, characters will travel from sector to sector using a short range (ie, millions of miles) high speed propulsion system"

I guess pointing in the right direction would be a good idea.

I find it only natural that it is possible to steer the ship while "in warp". I think we can do without the complexity of aiming the ship to some arbitrary direction.

John: I think that solar systems are assumed to be quite flat.

Forcing a ship to reorient before entering warp would probably eliminate the ability to warp-ram anything since you really wouldn't be able to aim it.

What if, when warping you had to steer your ship if it was damaged enough. Make it a challenge.

It seems pretty basic that our ships only damage is based on structural, no internal hardware, software or even environmental issues. It would be interesting to have some further details added to damage control.

It seems that it could open a new universe of ideas. Maybe some cool things could happen in hyper space? or even squads could hide in hyper space and attack (of coarse some structural damage could happen to their ships as they wait)

making any major course corrections while traveling that fast would tear a ship apart. Minor corrections yes, but not a 45/90/180 degree turns.

hey....i'm sure all the stunt space jockey's out there would give it a try : )

I know my brother would...just once anyway.

@Margoth

You know what happens when you ASSume right?! =P

So long as you limited your turns to no more than 90 degrees (perpendicular) to your current vector, your ship would be fine. For example:

(direction of thrust, assuming full thrust)

->->->-^ is fine.. you're not fighting the inertia you've builtup by going however fast in one direction. You're simply adding a new vector. Trying to turn around, or go beyond 90 degrees, and then firing full thrusters would probably turn you into a pancake even if the ship survived.

Basically you're not going to be tearing ships apart unless you try to fight the inertia you've built up with tremendous counter-force.
