ability to look backwards without turning ships nose backwards.

Mar 09, 2005 ananzi link
right now, you cant do this.

think about it.

only way you can do it right now is if you are in turbo mode.

otherwise, any time you put your view backwards, your
ships nose moves backwards too.

----

i think the numkeys could be good for this, ive seen it
in many other flightsim games. 2 is back, 5 is up, double
tap 5 is down, 6 is right, 4 is left. when you hold the
key down, view switches. when u let up off key, you
go back to normal face forward position.

cAn I get an AMEN!!!!

How about a toggle that turns on turbo mouselook behaviour, but not turbo speed. IMO, that would integrate better with the Vendetta's existing control system.

Why would you ever want to look backwards without turboing? The only time I can think of off would be while mining, and then you can just hit f2 and cycle through the view modes. (or whatever that toggle is, I've got a pretty old config file)

I mean if you've got a good situation for this then yeah, it makes sense. But I can't think of a time when I'd use it.

F9 now, but we get the idea.

I'm ambivolent about the suggestion in general. It could work, or it could be really annoying.

to see who is chsing you.

to see if your mines hit

to back into the station if you miss it and get rotated funny , esp with behemoth

to have cool views of things.

to see.

just to see

Err... I mean yea, It's a nice feature, but the situations you're listing don't really help your argument.

"to see who is chsing [sic] you"
--If you're being chased, aren't you turboing too?

"to see if your mines hit"
--Again, if you're in the situation where you're dropping mines and rotating 180 degrees away, doesn't that mean you're running away on turbo?

"to go back to the station if you miss it and get rotated funny, esp with behemoth"
--With a slow ship like the behemoth, wouldn't using mouselook to see the station entry do the same thing?

"to have cool views of things."
--Couldn't you just turn around?

I mean, yea, it'd be cool to have a "rear view mirror," but the only time I think it'd be remotely useful would be if you're attacked from behind while engaged in combat and you want to see who did it without physically turning your ship away from the current attacker.

If you have mouselook off, then even when you're turboing you can't look behind yourself, right? And if you're using a joystick, it forces you to not use mouselook.

I have to say I'd like this. It's not too high up on my list of "things I'd like to see", but it's definitely on there.

Id like to see it too, in no way high priority, it would just make it easer to get screenshots like this.

==it would take less time to implement this than we have spent here arguing about it.

"to see who is chsing [sic] you"
--If you're being chased, aren't you turboing too?

==sometimes you drop out of turbo because you dont have
infiniboost. sometimes you are doing ctc, and the time
it takes to mouselook backwards is valuable time that
you dont want to spend... because you want to pay attention
to stuff in front of you

"to see if your mines hit"
--Again, if you're in the situation where you're dropping mines and rotating 180 degrees away, doesn't that mean you're running away on turbo?

==no, not necessarily.

"to go back to the station if you miss it and get rotated funny, esp with behemoth"
--With a slow ship like the behemoth, wouldn't using mouselook to see the station entry do the same thing?

==no. if you use mouselook to look backwards, by the time you get
your view backwards, the nose has started to turn.

"to have cool views of things."
--Couldn't you just turn around?

==yeah but its inconvenient and besides you can never know
when you are looking 'directly right'.

I mean, yea, it'd be cool to have a "rear view mirror," but the only time I think it'd be remotely useful would be if you're attacked from behind while engaged in combat and you want to see who did it without physically turning your ship away from the current attacker

==this game is about more than 'being useful in combat'.
this game is about fun, and i think it would be fun to
be able to look around.

The thing of it is, the only reason you'd need to be able to look in a direction other than forwards, *NEED*, would be in a combat or stressful situation. Otherwise, it's really not a big deal to turn around on your own. I mean, there's no faster way to get a look behind you than to use mouselook, it's basically instantaneous, so any argument based on time doesn't work.. anything keyboard related would take just as much time - find the key, hit the key, look, get back to controls VS spin, look, spin back. About the same, really.

I can see how having something like this would help joystick users, but they'd still be at a disadvantage compared to a mouser. A couple of fixed cameras is a couple more keys that need to be bound.. and I'm running out :/

I almost forgot

the most important reason for this feature is that many of us
fly without mouselook.

without mouselook gives tighter control and a different feel
to the ship, and we would like a way to look around sometimes.
id like to look right/left so i can watch the CTC transport
as i sneak up on it. id like to look backwards for many of the
same reasons.

it would also just be fun. and it would also be
useful for 'movie making' as many people have done in vendetta.
Mar 11, 2005 Starfisher link
That's why you have a mouselook toggle. It basically becomes your "look around" button, and when you're done you turn it off and go back to looking forward.
Mar 11, 2005 Beolach link
But, when you turn mouselook on, you aren't JUST looking around, you're also turning your ship. Yes, there are ways to reduce that, but I'm still with ananzi on this, it'd be nice to be able to look backwards without turning at all.
