fonts all fuzzy

Im trying to run vendetta on a fanless 533mhz Via mini-itx board with the on-board 8mb graphics card. It actually runs well enough to do trading or basic-mining with details turned way down... this is an incredible statement about Guilds commitment to backasswards hardware.

I would use it except for two things:

The fonts are unreadably fuzzy, even at 800x600.

The radar doesn't work very well. Red dots kind of 'flicker'.. asteroids dont show at all.. there isn't much 'fade in' or 'fade out'. When you target one object, the others all disappear.

I would appreciate any hints about if it is possible to fix this.

Thank you.

In the config file, set ps_hack to 1. IE, put the following line in config.ini:

ps_hack=1

If it's set to 1, try setting it to 0. Also, turn off multipass rendering and turn on texture compression, if either option is engaged.

thanks but im afraid that didnt help. even at 1024x768 the in-flight chat text is super fuzzy and barely readable. i know its not the monitor because in normal Windows mode i can read web pages etc just fine.

Furthermore, in game, in the navmap, the little 's' at stations is just fine. And in the HUD, on the right, the little schematic of my ship is perfectly clear. But all the text around it is super fuzzy.

let me upgrade... im running directx 8.

this thing has an integrated KLE/PLE trident 3d something.

ok actually you cant upgrade from directx... the driver is stuck with 8 or something even if i install 9. ok but i select 9 in vendetta. but then none of the vsync switching/resolution switching works right.. anyways

i finally used rHUDxscale and rHUDyscale to make them readable.. course my HUD looks silly but its good enuff.

I wonder if the video card doesn't support 512x512 textures. The new(ish) fonts use that size texture now and the game would scale down the texture to fit the max texture size of the video card.

Can you try switching to opengl mode and then posting the openglinfo.log file that's generated where you installed VO to?
That would tell me if it can't support 512x512 textures.

Oops sorry to bother everyone, switching to openGL fixed the problem completely! Sorry.

You know, I didn't even know I had any open gl drivers on this thing. Anyways heres the dump, for posterity.

Well, it does appear to support 512x512 textures (and 1024x1024), so I doubt that's the problem. But I'll wait until a dev looks at this, eh?

its fine in opengl mode. people with this crap of a vid card like i have can just use opengl instead of directx.

i just posted the output for posterity. nothing to see here. move along.

[edit]

ok aactually it doesnt work 'fine' in opengl mode. the computer keeps crashing with 'details' showing some error in the opengl driver dll file. tridicdp.dll or something like that. the trident driver for the ol' original via epia motherboard, which is what i have.

so now im running it back in directx mode with rHUDxscale and rHUDyscale set to really silly proporations, so that my radar circles take up about 1/4 of the screen. but at least i can read the fuzzy text, and it doesnt crash.

i really need to just get a new computer ...
