Have no fear: MIGHTY MOUSE IS HERE!

...but I am going to wait until they release a wireless version.

In case you haven't heard:

Things I dislike:

No Panther support for its software. There's no excuse why they couldn't make this happen. Absolutely none whatsoever. They just want to sell more copies of Tiger. And while they can be used with older versions of OS X, many of its advertised features are nonfunctional. Bad move, Apple.

No tactile feedback. The buttons are pressure sensitive. I've read from early reports that if you want to right-click, for example, you need to release pressure from the left side of the mouse as you press down. Otherwise it would be interpreted as being a left and right click. Very awkward operation.

Things I like:

A spherical scrollwheel. Finally! Why hasn't anyone else made this? I've been wondering for the longest time why nobody has. And now Apple has done it. I only hope Logitech will follow in those footsteps also. Thank you!

It has a nice design. And if it's anything like Apple's older line of "pro" mice, it should feel solid also. It's good to see they haven't decided to go overboard on it and stuck with the simplicity. So I'll give 'em that.

Conclusion:

It's great to see a mouse with an improved scrollwheel. But the lack of Panther support and the awkwardness of having pressure-sensitive controls really kills it for me, especially for gaming purposes. I think I'll still stick to my Logitech MX310 for now.

I noticed that new mouse when I got on my computer this afternoon. Finally an apple mouse with 2 CLICKS OMG! The mouse looks like a high quality good looking mouse. Hopefully they will come out with the version for Panther and stuff :P. But views due tend to get a little biased between the lucky people with Tiger and the unfortunate with Panther or lower. But I'm glad I have tiger.

You're absolutely right! There's no reason they shouldn't've wasted their time and money developing support for a rapidly diminishing minority of their installbase! Especially since people who hate buying software LOVE buying hardware![/sarcasm]

Rapidly diminishing? I'd say the vast majority of Mac users are still at Panther. Tiger still isn't quite up to being stable enough for major businesses to make that safe transition yet. Heck, I wouldn't even call it a transition. Panther and Tiger are nearly identical to each other, containing only some slight changes that have absolutely nothing to do with how the mouse works. Which kind of makes you question why the software of Mighty Mouse is so strictly limited to Tiger users.

You'd maybe only have to change 1% of it to make it compatible for Panther. The mouse drivers for both new and old versions of OS X are identical in every way possible. The only major difference is one version of OS X has Dashboard and the other one doesn't. I don't know why anyone would think that it would be a good idea to divide Mac users based on that difference, let alone force everyone to upgrade their OS by paying over a hundred dollars. Absolutely ridiculous.

Apparently, tiger also has to be patched up to 14.2 for the software to install. The parts that aren't the squeeze buttons are working fine though, although it's a bit disturbing that lifting the mouse off the table means the little piezo inside won't make a noise for the side buttons anymore.

Anyway, it's a mouse, what can I say about a mouse. It's the prettiest mouse I've ever seen, and the cord is rather short, probably meant to plug into a keyboard. That's about it.
