Would vendetta have a problem running on, say... a 600MHz G3 iMac w/ 256MB RAM? and is it possible to run it on an earlier OS?

ah!

i think you do need os x to run vendetta.. however turn your graphics all the way down and everything like that and it may run on almost anything! (that is if that anything has os x)

yea, tho I dunno if the thing does/can run OSX...

Yes, it can run OSX. I've run OSX on computers down to 233mhz. 256mb of RAM is kinda scraping the bottom of the bucket for VO, and 600mhz isn't spectacular.

I wouldn't install Tiger on that compy, but rather Panther (10.3) because of the things that Tiger has going on under the hood, and the RAM that things like Dashboard take up. You'll also want to turn a lot of the effects and graphics options waaay down and hopefully you'll get decent FPS.

But you can run it on that computer, which I s'pose is the answer you're looking for.

it is indeed =)

thanks!

EDIT: err... isn't Jaguar 10.2? or should I be looking for 10.3 Panther?

err, yes. >_< you want 10.3 Panther.

I've played Vendetta on a 350 MHz iMac G3 with 512 MB Ram and OS X Jaguar. You can't get the best graphics, but nevertheless I was amazed!

Yeah, our main mac was a blue/white G3-350 with like 382 megs of ram and a rage128 video card. The game has run on all versions of OSX but 10.1 and anything earlier than 10.2.9 was too buggy so we don't support those versions.
VO should still run on the older hardware, but as others said, you'll have to turn all the gfx settings all the way down.
The other thing is any new content will need a more powerful computer. The new ships are much more detailed than the older ships and they use shaders to look really nice. The reason the minimum spec for the game is relatively high is due these changes and updates.

Having to turn the graphics all the way down is only partially true.

I cannot say this for sure, but on multiple computers (G3 iMacs all of them) below 500 MHz, VO ran fine (that was way back before the p2p beta). I cannot give you the setup I had because I don't remember, but just tune things up bit by bit until it's unplayable, then tune that down again and try with another setting... that way, you get pretty decent fps whilst not having to miss out on all the iCandy.
