graphics in os X

Dec 18, 2004 macguy link
Is there a reason that the os X vendetta supposidly has a lesser ablity to do graphics then the windows version(i hope that makes sense)? I heard it was because of some issues with how os X does things. Could one of the devs please explain and and tell me if when or if ever that will be fixed? Or will us poor mac users always be left behind?(although if the fixing meant that the system would need more ram, more processor speed and better graphics card then let it stay how it is unless there is a way to fix without causing there to be high requirements)

macguy, can you expand on your statement that "OS X Vendetta has a lesser ability to do graphics than the windows version...)?

I'm running OS X and have been particularly impressed with the graphics quality of VO. It even supports my native resolution of 2560x1600, and is the only game I have found that will do that. In fact, the VO graphics is one of the things that sold me on the game and I can't imagine what the Win version does that could be better.

What do you see as the problems/limitations?

Mainly shaders, not that i ever noticed them ever doing anything. I have a 1.24 Ghz emac with a ati 9600 with i think 32megabytes of ram on it. I rember the devs saying something about the mac having trouble doing some graphics, I think it was in the post about full screen anti aliasing.

I have an emac 1.25 Ghz as well, and you have a radeon 9200 with 32 MB of vram. (Video card is hardwired to motherboard so you can't have a 9600). It's not so much the problem with os X. It's just that the 9200 doesn't support much of the features, such as Rglow. the 10.3.6 update fixed shaders tho. so those should work. my only suggestion is that if you want better performance, upgrade your ram since you can't upgrade your video card.

I have 768 megabytes of ram which should be plenty, but I'll turn shaders back on and see how that works. By the way, do shaers really make much of a difference? Like, what will I see different?

The shaders would make the stations look a little nicer (bumpmapped) and some asteroids too.
It also allows the glow effect.

The Radeon 9200 should be able to perform the shader effects, albeit a little slower than more recent video cards.

Because you only have a 32meg card, I would recommend making sure your texture resolution level is set to medium or other setting because that seems to have a big effect on rendering speed on the mac.

The only thing that really would be different between Windows and other is the difference in DirectX vs. OpenGL modes which is the ice crystals don't look the same.

Hum, do you think that the rendering will ever be optimized for the both, once the game gets older and such? And you guys have time to *gasp*! relax and chill for a bit.

Macguy: Have you actually seen Vendetta on a PC?? I ask because I have not.
Unfortunately (?) I don't know anyone who has a PC. However, I have had two
people tell me that Vendetta DOES look better on a PC. This is not exactly a
huge statistical sample, nor were any specs given for the machines being compared.
Personally, I think Vendetta looks great on my comp (Dual 1Ghz G4) and that
it looks even better after 1.1.6 and an update to OSX 10.3.7...

I'm gonna check it out on my girlfriends pc when I got down to see her for new years. Since I plan on playing a little while i'm down there. I'll try to post a reply about the graphics if i rember. I probaly will.
