Meh, I think they should do away with the duel system, and bring back the old high score charts! Oh, and dont gimmie any onf this *but that doesnt fit very well with rp crap* - cos the only RP atm in this gane is player made.

:P

What I always do, is before I start a duel, I eliminate all nav-route courses I have set. Believe it or not, this doesn't always work, (on more than 5 occasions I have gotten to the navroute screen, clicked my destination, and hit jump before I had officially won the duel,) but you have to be really stupid, (like me), to do all that and not remember why you didn't have any navroutes in the first place.

If everyone can just find a simple solution, and quite yammering at the devs for stuff that really is low on the priority list, they might actually be able to get something done. Wow, think about that!

I *really* don't understand this.

Martin: How can it possibly be "easy" to hit the enter or return button once you finish duelling?

Cunjo: responsible for HALF your duel losses? You must be joking.

There's no reason to mess with this at all. Just hang out for 5 seconds before you leave. No big deal. What am I missing? Why is it so hard for a duel winner to just relax for 5 seconds after their win?
Nov 06, 2005 who? me? link
because, lebemac, if the person were to wait for 5 seconds, then they would be missing out on all of the fun that is to be had in that time! dont you see their predicament? to not have that fun, or to lose the duel? its really a tough desicion

terj:

Yes, it's fairly simple, and clearly the most practical solution, HOWEVER, it doesn't fit gameplay dynamics... how do you explain that? better to have some working reason why you can't leave, or come up with another solution that does have a working reason.

Because my activate key is on my joystick and I tend to hit it rather instinctively.

I can vouch for waiting around being kinda annoying. The game waited a full 5 seconds for me to get my credit after my last duel, and I almost went "well, I won. *jump*".

*shrug* It would be nice if this just worked.
Nov 06, 2005 Big Mike85 link
yeah but what if youre the guy who just died and still won the duel? (like me)

personally i say keep it the same. if yall cant wait before jumpin then tuff luck.

I won three.....THREE!!!.....duels cause someone couldnt wait a few seconds. I would die and then it would say hey you won!! three times in a row this happened. i can see if it happens once then yeah. but three times......youd think he wouldve got the hint. lol.

anyway i say dont mess with it. not yet anyway. far too much other stuff that neds to be fixed/changed/dealt with first.

Hummm... Like Martin, I have my "activate" bound to my stick, and I also tend to use it rather instinctively (as well as several others, hehe)... but I looked for another solution.

I have a toggle bind on a button on my stick console that "rebinds" that key to "wait 5 activate"... hit it again and it is just "activate".

I did that after jumping too early in a duel... now, my problem is remembering to toggle *that* danged key at the beginning of a duel... and I haven't dueled enough lately that I would have remembered, without having thought about it because of this thread... so thanks for the reminder.

Do 5 barrel rolls in celebration!!!

see RelayeR is on the right track. lets just attach a stigmatisam to not doing victory dances after duels the same way we have to running, and the use of seeking missiles.

recomended derogatory terms for those who don't do a victory dance:
"non-dancers"
"jumpers"
"jump-happy-no-dancers"
"morons"

isn't it an accepted gesture to roll your wings back and forth in a salute after a victory?
Nov 07, 2005 LeberMac link
That's a "waggle" Cunjo, and, it's usually an acknowledgement that you've seen someone or will comply with their request.
Seta - feel free to correct me if I'm wrong! :)

And Martin/Seta/et. al.: Solution then is to move your "activate" switch from your stick to the kybd? Not make changes to the ingame code?
Nov 07, 2005 RelayeR link
Conjo is correct... The RAF and American pilots in the Battle of Britain would buzz the tower and waggle after a victorious scramble for a buzz bomb or a German bombing run. American fighters in the Pacific would do the same.

That sounds like a Microsoft solution Lebermac.

"Excuse me sir, you've found a bug. May I suggest you don't do it that way again"
Nov 07, 2005 Harry Seldon link
Werd, Martin. This whole topic is starting to sound rather like that...
Nov 07, 2005 leapfrog link
You are *exactly* correct, Leber... a waggle is "an acknowledgement that you've seen someone [AND - not "or"] will comply with their request"... and especially nowadays... something to know as a pilot if you are *not* in radio contact with the "escort"... or risk being, uh... *forced* to comply.

(off topic a bit) At least they are now letting us pilots *know* about the surprise TFRs that pop up... they were keeping them secret for a while... it's a catch-22... if they publish the TFR (temporary flight restriction), then they are telling the bad guys "HERE!, RIGHT HERE!"... but how do you bust someone who strays into one that was never published??? Basically, how do you give someone a chance to avoid airspace that is *not* marked a NFZ??? Your tax dollars at work. (back on topic)

I understand Martin's point of view... but it is not just MS that approaches bugs with that point of view (I work with a *lot* of software companies), so definitely no need for a platform war... case in point...

I *did* work around the "issue" rather easily... but as I tried to illustrate in my earlier post I had forgotten about my "work-around"... so... basically, my bad if I didn't use it (I knew about it... I fixed it for me... and I forgot about it... me <--- old fart - it happens)

It comes down to one of those things where you can't (maybe shouldn't) have it both ways... you fix an exploit, you create a burden... perhaps my off-topic example is rather a good analogy afterall...

[edit] And NO FREAKIN' WAY am I moving my activate - or any of the other binds I currently enjoy - off my sticks... heck, it's been a painful road traveled to get here... hehe...[/edit]

[edit 2]RelayeR... *actually* the "waggle" definition as I presented it (and as Leber did) stands - there is formal [i.e. government] documentation to that effect... *VICTORY* is/was always celebrated by a close pass (the buzz-job), followed by a barrel roll... now, kiddies... quiz time... anyone actually know the difference between a "barrel roll" (not actually used in space - no need) and a "point roll" (actually used in space)?[/edit 2]

Leber:
I'm actually referring more to the one where you roll to visually confirm a downed plane =P

oh, and I missed your earlier post somehow...

>>"responsible for HALF your duel losses? You must be joking."<<

I'm not joking... I think I have 4 duel losses, and two of them were due to jumping too early. I don't duel a lot, and even then only if I have to (friendly fire)
