Current Guide system is NOT working

Ok, first, I apologize for the size of my next post. It's an excerpt of my most recent errors.log file that frankly shows IMNSHO a guide walking a fine line. Did they cross it? I don't know... that's something for the devs to determine.

Let me also add that yes, I HAVE admined game servers before. Specifically FPS game servers (Half-Life mod FireArms to be specific). And if you think that OUR community is bad.. hehe... the HL community is just down right UGLY. There you CAN cheat and people LOVE to come in and spew racist remarks or other types of hate speech. They call it "Raging the game". :( So yes, I've DEALT with people calling me some nasty names and hurling other insults at me. ANY Admin/Guide MUST MUST MUST have a thick skin if they are going to be a guide for very long. I've only taken out the irrelevant portions of the log. IE stuff that happened before this started, and when it was all over. I also took out portions that had no bearing at all (IE the OS convo that went on during that period of time).

Now, IMNSHO, yes, Guides SHOULD be protecting people from verbal abuse. I HAVE to say that IMNSHO neither Arolte NOR myself verbally abused anyone. (Nor to be honest, were either of us verbally abused but at LEAST the guide did something.) At WORST, we were talking trash to each other.

I ALSO feel that guides NEED to step in to stop griefers and YES, newb killings. Unfortunately, at this time, all they are able to do is stop bad language. :(

I'd ALSO like to see that when a guide is taking action that they let us KNOW they are doing it. Just a simple "I'm aware and am taking care of the problem". OR EVEN IF we ask for a Guide, have the guide come back and say globally "Yes?". Something, ANYTHING. Just let us KNOW you're alive and doing something. THAT is what prompted my comment about "at least do SOMETHING Guides". And to then be warned myself!!! That's wrong. In that statement, I did NOTHING nor said ANYTHING (IMNSHO) at all wrong. And to be warned for it .. that's where I feel the guide crossed the line.

And let me finally add this. Should this have gone into the suggestion area or possibly on StarFreeze's board? I don't think so. IMO, this is something that should be discussed and then when a consensus comes out of how the community feels about all this, then work can be done to implement/fix the guide system. And as far as putting it on SF's board... well, AFAIK, the devs don't normally read that board. They do read this board.

Also, please note: I do NOT want the guide who talked to me punished or anything. He/she was operating in the guildelines given to him/her. What I am proposing here is that those guidelines be changed.

What I *really* don't understand is the strange taboo about "bad language" - can someone explain to me what's so bad about graphic language?

Hell - every kid knows how to swear - they think it's cool - so what exactly is this taboo about?

Regards,
Mark

"I'd say the guide was too soft on you. Definatly."

And why is that Genka? (By now, in case you haven't figured it out, Tantris is me. :D) What did I do that was SOOO BAD? ALL I did was express an opinion. Which is simply that I don't think the guides are doing their job. Or if they are, they aren't doing it effectivly. IF they (both guides and devs) don't want to hear this kind of constructive criticism or the guide in question doesn't have enough of a thick skin to shrug off my comment... well that person shouldn't be a guide IMNSHO.
Jun 08, 2003 Renegade ++RIP++ link
Furball, in my opinion the guide didn't do anything wrong, he was even a little to easygoing on you.

Next time just /ignore a player like that.

I was wondering, would it be possible if you /ignored a player, that you couldn't see his ship, or his chatlogs and he couldn't see you. exceptt when the person involved is carrying the flag.

so in short, you could disable pirates in this way if you wanted and make it so that for every newbieaccount created the a certain number of accounts get blocked inherently. But once they reach a certain score (30k) those people don't get /ignored anymore and it is up to the players himself if they want to have contact with those certain players.

Problem is, I don't know if this is possible, or even a good thought

cheers

OK, I think I'm quite confused. Guys, Furball is "Tantris," not "alienb21."

I think I read the entire log, and didn't see furball curse once. Whichever guide that was really had his head screwed on backwards. If I were he, I would have muted alienb21, and be done with it.

Regarding swearing, even with a chat filter, the devs want to keep a relatively clean atmosphere, because if they're showing the game off to a publisher, they wouldn't want to have the words up there, or even a bunch of "**** this you **** piece of ****."

For this reason guides are implemented. I initially pictured guides as real people in-game that would help newbies along with missions and gameplay. Give them a valk with 3 beam cannons, 500k c, and lock them into 1/4, 2/12, and 3/6. They would show newbies how to trade, bot, fly, and fight. If someone was unfortunate (or dumb) enough to wander in looking for newbies to kill, the 3 dev cannons would take care of them asap.

Fur, I tend to agree with you about gameplay. There should be some sort of "universal police" in-game, but would rather see the problem solved IC rather than OOC. IC would be to have a strong police force for each populated sector (1 & 7 would have police, but 15 & 17 would not) that would crack down on "unkosher" activities. For instance, nuking a station, mining a station, camping newbies as they undock, etc.

However, an OOC example would be a guide kicking <<<Gold Killer>>> off the web because of his name. There is nothing offensive in his name, and is rather stupid to use such. This way, his intentions are broadcast before he acts, and whenever he is killed, he can never blame pirating or griefing ("You state you kill golds, well, I kill GK's). Granted, it is "bad" role-playing, and I would rather see him roleplay "well" by using a name such as "Itani/Serco Raider," or something along those lines. However, if he has a beef with NT, that's his right as a player to shape the storyline.

Jim first took to space in 2540, at the young age of 18. His father was a wealthy business man that made his way through the universe as a trader of holographic discs. These discs would provide a virtual getaway for the user. His father started in a lowly EC-88 and worked his way up to using fleets of Centuars—massive trading starships. At 18, Jim's father had him come-onbard operations as a cook. However, after dealing well with emergencies, he was promoted to commanding officer (2nd in command) of one of his father's Centuars. Jim discovered new, profitable trade routes and made his father more wealthy than before. On a fateful day in 2545, Jim and his father were making a run between Sectors #3493 and #4004. As they entered a sector, Jim noticed several hostiles on his long-range scanners. He quickly IFFed them and found that they were NT pirates. His father gave orders for the convoy to scatter and run for the station. Jim watched in horror as the convoy was slowly ripped apart by the NT mauraders. After destroying each Centuar, a maurader would stop and gather the cargo left by the fallen ship. Jim's father was leading the ships to the station when a maurader attacked his ship. His father badly damaged the Maurader with his auto-turrets, but maneuvered into a volley of rockets. As his ship detonated around him, Jim's father aimed one last burst of hot plasma at the maurader, but missed narrowly. The maurader was too damaged to fight any farther, and turned tail for Sector #4001. Jim scanned the vessel as it left the system and discovered its name: Furball. Frustrated by his lack of combat skills, and deeply grieving over his father's death, Jim vows to avenge his loss. After repairing, he and the remains of his father's holo-disc convoy head home. Jim sells the ships, invests in a highly agile combat fighter, the Valkyrie, and sets out to make the NT pay for the grief that was caused to him.

Granted, guys, that ^that^ would have been good-roleplaying. But, unfortunately, GK is nothing of the sort. However, it does not make his actions any wronger than someone named "Defense Ship 4." :P that is all.

Granted I wasn't in the best of moods last night and I did curse quite a number of times, as shown above, I did however feel that the guides at the time singled me out. The character "alienb21" has "verbally abused" me many times before this incident, and only once did the guides say anything to him. Even after repeated offenses he never received any more warnings or disciplinary actions. Yet, this one time where a guide just happens to be on at the time... this very one time where I lose it, I become the target all of a sudden. I don't know whether it's because guides can't look over the server 24/7, but this isn't exactly the best way to approach "adminning" the server. Checking back logs on a daily or weekly basis would probably be more fair.

Also, I believe anyone who repeatedly kills someone, especially newbies, with intent of causing them to "snap" should be dealt with just as much as the person who is cursing. I don't know if anything was said to those two last night, but I've been told that the guides discussed something with Serco players BEFORE taking any action. So if in fact this wasn't a dev, there could be the possibility that this particular guide was biased against Gold players. If "alienb21" and "Maynard_McGuffin" got off easy on that day and "Tantris" and I were the only ones spoken to, then clearly there's some negligence on the part of the guide that needs to be reported. If in fact everyone who was involved in the argument was spoken to, then I've got no problem with that.

There's some level of understanding that this is after all a game. We should be having fun in a competitive environment where we give each other friendly gestures when battles are fought (i.e. good fight, nice try, nice shot, etc.). However, when someone plays the game to hunt individuals down repeatedly (most of the case with newbies), they really have no other intention of playing the game other than to get a thrill out of seeing someone curse after they've been killed repeatedly. It's akin to a troublemaker lobbing rocks and stones off of a freeway bridge. It's fun to them, but they get a bigger thrill out of seeing the drivers get pissed off. There are a lot of players out there with this sort of mentality that really ruin it for the community, IMO.
Jun 08, 2003 Forum Moderator link
1) It's fine to post the log here.

2) Both Maynard_McGuffin and alienb21 were spoken to about the verbal abuse before anyone else was spoken to. They both settled down, though one needed to be spoken to a little longer than the other.

3) The Guides currently do not have access to the entire log.

4) All of the Guide's special commands, including the one that sends the white text server and Guide messages, are logged differently by the server and emailed to the developers. It is automated and the Guides have no access to it.

5) Currently you *can* swear and there is a filter for that reason. You *cannot* verbally abuse others by swearing *at* them or making overly rude or lewd remarks about them. You the players requested this specifically in the past. *I* would include calling somebody "dumbass" in this. Arolte did not include his log of how he was singled-out, but Guide7732 recalls that the "dumbass" comment resulted in a pm of "I'm speaking to people about their language...and you're not helping."

5) The Guides have been using their white-text PM ability to speak to players because people tend to respond better when they are not publicly admonished. Players who were not aware that the Guide text is private and were quite nasty in response to the Guides settled down immediately and complied once they found that it was private. This is human nature. The Guides would rather have players appear to correct their own behavior. Guides have spoken to players and watched them immediately apologize to the other players (although they were not asked to do so) and totally solve their own problem.

5a) In life, school or work people do not have the *right* to know when somebody is being spoken to or punished for their behavior. In the working world it is actually illegal for an employer to share information about specific disciplinary action against an employee. It's also basic mutual respect.

6) "<Tantris> If all you're going to do is wathc language... at least do SOMETHING Guides." etc. Keep in mind that the Guides (and the Forum Moderator) are following the guidelines set forth by the developers (i.e. the Guides cannot arbitrarily decide to police something - even if they REALLY want to), that they are unpaid volunteers selected by the developers, and that it is a THANKLESS job. Criticizing them about things outside of their control is unfair and annoying. Guide7732 does say that his "watch it" comment was not his finest moment.

way to eliminate swearing, don't send messages that have swear words in, but this will need better filtering, as suspicious won't be sent, and you can always bypass it. but if you can't send messages that you swore in:
1) no one can see it
2) the person needs to stop swearing to get the point across
3) eliminate people who wants to see people swearing at them

1) we need to know what the guides can do
2) we need to know what the guides can punish for
3) we need a way to message all guides on at the time, limit this to like 2 messages a minute so they don't get spamed
4) we need more guides
5) we need a way to test people to see if they can be trusted as a guide if we ever get a way to sign up to be a guide. No i don't mean players and other guides opinions, i mean seeing letting them be a guide for awhile, if they punish people too much or to strictly they say bye bye to the guide privelge

I've BEEN there. I KNOW what it's like. I KNOW how unthankless the job is. AT LEAST when I was adminning my server when I did an admin command, at LEAST it said that an admin did something. As an admin, I KNEW I had to be thick skinned and not get upset about someone complaining about my admin activities (or lack there of) UNLESS it continued for some time. Then and ONLY then would I have said something to that person. Is it there for me to criticize the system? Yes actually. Its' the only way for us to figure out how to make the system work.

Now, for Renegade and genka please answer this question. WHAT was it that I did that was SOOO wrong that I should be warned? I'm not seeing it.

As far 0xD, please delete your post. This is completely off topic and is inflammitory. If you wish to discuss this, take it over to SF's board and I'll respond there.

Allow me to offer a suggestion as to what the guides can do to make the game a more friendly environment for everyone. The way I see it, the Vendetta community is split into two groups of players. It's simple, really. The "good players" and the "bad players." Allow me to explain how each one is categorized.

The "good players" are the friendly and competitive players who like to PLAY the bad guys for fun. The are not real enemies that take anything personally, but rather just in pretend like any other role playing game. These people are what I consider friends or neutrals. And ideally this is the way the game should be played. Personal examples include, but are not limited to, Eldrad, Ku Genin, Private Pile, and Ti Frekan. I get into battles with 'em sometimes, but only because we're in different nations and that's the way the game is supposed to be played. We don't kill each other repeatedly and we don't hold grudges, yet we still manage to get into fights with each other without losing our temper. The reason for that? Two little things called honor and respect.

And THEN there are the "bad players" who need an attitude adjustment. Players who have a habit of holding grudges and play with malicious intent. These are usually players that target newbies repeatedly or hold stubborn grudges towards individuals (or the entire nation). They don't play the game to capture flags, trade, bot, or do anything that's considered productive. They don't play the game for teamwork either. They play the game for the sole purpose of getting people pissed off and by getting all the attention they can, perhaps due to something they may be lacking or having trouble with in real life. It's purely psychological. It may also be considered as "trolling" in the game.

In terms of examples, immediately Icarus and Gold Killer come to mind. These guys are the reason why newbies quit, or why people snap and start cursing sometimes. Do I think they should be banned for being repeated newbie killers? Yes. And if moderators or guides or whatever cannot interfere to put a stop to it, they can at least try to discuss what's wrong to these troubled players and to maybe somehow convince them to pick a more productive or friendly way of playing. Obviously they may not change their ways at the first moment they talk to a guide, but perhaps repeated and gradual conversations may change their attitudes about the game overall.

Either way, I think the guides should step in and say something to "bad players" or griefers. To some extent the guides can still serve as a form of diplomat by moderating and resolving a conflict that may be occuring between two or more players. Whether the moderators know it or not, most of what amplifies these conflicts and makes them worse is not the namecalling and cursing, but the very actions of the players themselves.

In addition to that, nobody likes to see a player leave or be driven out of a game due to an immature player getting cheap thrills out of killing their victim mercilessly and repeatedly. It's an acknowledged problem and even with a penalty system or improved defenses or whatever, eventually there will need to be SOME human intervention to prevent it. There's no proof positive way to dodge this issue completely with any level of programming or game structure. If there is then I'd like to see it. Because so far no online game has that capability.

I wasn't reffering to your being told to "watch it", but I can see where the guide was coming from, being told to do something while you are doing something is not the most plesant thing in the world.

Anyhow, I was saying that your responce to being told to watch is was a bit uncalled for, and somewhat nasty, but the guide kept calm. In his/her place I would've either not responded, or answered with equal nastiness. Although maybe I just have a bad juger-of-nastiness device, and your chat was quite civil. Sorry. I'm a bad judge of emotions in written text...
