Video Trade Tutorials

Feb 12, 2012 Phaserlight link
I made a pair of tutorial videos involving trade, as that topic was not covered in my previous tutorial series, and there was some interest in the dynamic market on mmorpg.com

Trade Tutorial I
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RBkcFqIOSOQ

Trade goods, widgets, cu, profit, sell price, buy price, commodities, components, manufacturing, piracy, rebound rates, system-to-system trade.

Trade Tutorial II
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o62aYKf5mCQ

More of the above, plus a fast-forward montage of some trading with Tripswitch on the soundtrack.

I apologize for my slowness of speech, I blame morning brain. Comments, criticism welcome.

Couple Comments:
Selling items from the load/unload tab is a bad practice if you care about profits. The problem is that the unload/load tab shows the selling price for selling a single unit, and if you sell in bulk the unit profit could be less due to price falloff, or even negative as was reported by a newbie in this thread. Using the Commodities > Sell tab is better because the price falloff will be displayed correctly.

You don't need to launch from the station to see the best sell prices on the Inventory > Cargo tab

Thanks for the tips meridian! I'm only at my Intermediate Trader I badge, so obviously I still have a few things to learn. Some of these I realized after posting the video, like the price falloff thing. I didn't know about the best sell prices on the Inventory > Cargo tab before launching, that's cool.

ryan, I'm guessing that text is transcribed from the close captioning; youtube's automatic service is pretty hilarious.

Anyway, I hope I'm at least able to show a few newbs how player actions do affect the market in VO. A lot of people ask "Is the economy player driven"? To which the reflexive response seems to be "No, not really" from the community. Personally, I'm not convinced this is the case. At least, it short-changes the complexity of VO's dynamic market.

"Player driven economy" may mean ten different things to ten different people, when in fact what you sell will affect prices throughout systems. That, combined with certain high end items that are only created via manufacturing, seems to support at least the infrastructure for a player-driven economy. How this compares to a game like Eve, I'm not sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if there were fewer substantive differences than the usual conditioned response implies.
