I'll be in for the final version, provided Florida has not sunk into the Atlantic from repeated hurricane bombardment ;).

I may be able to play for a couple months but then it's off to the U.S. Airforce for me.

Well, I would definitely donate to Guild except for the fact that I'm 14 and have no credit card... maybe I can convince my parents... hmm...

/me goes to think.

/me is back, but hasn't thought yet.

Yeah, I actually think this version would definitely be the best version yet if there were more players. As of now, there are of course not many players. There should be more in the next 2-3 weeks and then we should have a rocking party going, and tons of space for everyone. I would definitely p2p, but I don't know if my parents are going to pay by the month for this. If I only had some cash...

Well, I'm over for today. Cya.

*sniffle* Ickle baby Vendetta-poo is growing up and getting a job! (Blame Incarnate for the bad metaphor. He said that what the game had been through already was college...)

I know I'll still hang around in IRC for a while, that's a given. And I second the proposal for an official channel for post-release players (We've had a few attempts, though I'm not entirely sure which one(s) will make it...).

However, I'm another one of those poor students with not enough time to devote to a game if it requires a monthly payment of sorts. Nor would my parents approve of how I was spending my lunch/gas money, as they already dislike my playing of the game anyway (hasn't stopped me much...). I'll try to get the CD and check in every now and then, and perhaps make a reappearance next summer, but for now, I'm packed.

May I suggest a bash a few days before release? Huge party, three days long, make everything, anything, and more available for all and cheap, dump a load of creds in everyone's account... whee, avalons!

(uhm... yeah, I'll edit this when I'm awake.)

we should definitely make a post-release channel. i already have registered one and will be looking for operators (its name is now shorter than it was before, don't worry). we should discuss this, though.

I'm short on cash, but more importantly, short on time. Until I finish my MCATs I won't have any time to devote to a $15/month game.

But, as Macarthur once said: "I shall return!"

When did Guild publish a subscription price?
Sep 10, 2004 roguelazer link
$29.99 for the box
$9.99 a month

I'll be a paying customer.

Errr... where'd you get $10/month from? That seems like a lot. I thought they were aiming for a very cheap price. At least according to the earlier description of the game. If it's that expensive then I guess I'll never be able to play.

=(

That's what Incarnate said at one point. And $10 is actually less than most other games out there.

30 a box and 10 a month is very cheap compared to every other MMO out there... at least the ones I've heard of.
Sep 10, 2004 Arolte link
Ten a month is still hella expensive in my book. The price they've been planning all along was supposedly less than $10 a month. Oh well, I guess reality had to sink in sometime. It was fun while it lasted.

Hmm well... according to MY math, $9.99 IS LESS THAN $10.00. And $120 a year is NOT THAT expensive... HELL, I can spend that much a month on gas!

I am still unhappy with many aspects of vendetta (remember, this is still a test, beta, bla bla). I don't think I would pay anything for vendetta as-is. BUT, even though vendetta is mostly boring right now (that will change, I know!), we had a lot of fun earlier this year. The whole INM vs SAW thing was really a blast. The INM even had elections, and patrols, and reports, and a council, and what not. I had a good time and I am willing to buy vendetta just for that. I will subscribe for 6 month and buy the box. It was a pleasure to participate in this beta and throwing some cash at the devs is the least we all can do for the past 2 years of playing vendetta. After those initial 6 month I will have to see how far the missing content has come along.

I'm currently at a college that is blocking certain ports, so I won't be able to play here. It'd be worth getting to play between semesters, though.

>>The whole INM vs SAW thing was really a blast.<<

There we go then. Conflicts between two nazi organizations are fun.
(At least in video-games.)

Furball, look at it this way. You typically play a computer game for about 2-3 yrs throughout its lifetime if it's good (and that's not nonstop or anything). Or 5+ yrs if it's really good. You also typically only pay a one-time fee of $50 to play that game for as long as you want. But at a rate of $10/month, you'll end up paying $240 or $360 during that game's lifetime. Let's see, $50 versus $360. I understand that $10 is typical in the MMORPG world, but I also understand that the money spent on playing that game throughout its lifetime can also get me at least 7 or 8 more good titles to play with for an even longer time, all with no pay-to-play fee. Granted yes you get a persistent and huge universe to play in, but for me I don't think that would be enough to justify the price. Maybe for some it is. To each their own I guess.

Although nothing has officially been announced, if what roguelazer says is true, I have to say I feel a bit disappointed and mislead by the earlier descriptions of the game being priced very cheaply. $1 less than typical MMORPGs isn't exactly what I had in mind. But like I said, I guess reality sank in and they just had to go with the higher price. If that's the case all I can do part ways and wish Guild Software the best of luck in their future.

I feel no regret that I spent all this time playing and testing this game. In fact I feel that I've been lucky enough to have the privelage in participating in this wonderful experience, as well as contribute a monetary amount (albeit not much) during times of financial skepticism. What they have now is a kickass title on their hands and I think there'll be many paying customers in their future. But unfortunately I also fear that it'll be out of the price range for some individuals (especially for those who are typically not MMORPG fanatics and will have trouble justifying the costs--which seems to be quite a lot of the current players according to a poll in the Off Topic forum).

I agree with Arolte's assessment of the situation. I recall, very near the time I started, a target price of @$5/mo plus the cost of the game. While this was just wild specualtion on the devs part, the thought stuck. Like Arolte said, reality may have set in or circumstances may have changed to make a $10/mo price necessary. I will continue to pay that much as long as I enjoy the game because *I* control the purse strings. Others, particularly students and lovers of the game with someone else in control of the money *will* find it hard, if not impossible to play.

Henry Ford had a good idea...make and sell it cheap and make up for it in volume. Now-a-days, the philosophy (especially Apple's) has, again, gone to "Whatever the market will bear." It's up to the devs to decide how they want this free-market experience of their's to proceed. It's their baby.
Sep 11, 2004 Starfisher link
You can't make up for it volume when it comes to software, especially niche games like Vendetta. Face it - the entire gaming world will not be playing this game. Not even a large fraction of it. Ford could do what he did for all sorts of reasons that don't apply to the modern gaming industry.

Who knows how much Vendetta cost to develop? Four people working for two years - say $20,000 a year each to survive (probably too low, but you get the idea) is at least $160,000 in investment they need to repay. AT LEAST. The actual figure is certainly higher than that, factoring in publishing costs, marketing, two years of hosting, renting their office...

I'm frankly sort of suprised that other people are suprised at $10 a month. This is the company that almost had to shut itself down back around Christmas time - they are going to need all the money they can get, peerless artistic integrity or not.
