When We think of Space We think of those Left
Behind by the endless Bickering of
the two largest Nations... whose fierce Love
Of Hatred cannot be split by any cleft.

How will Humanity find its way back
to the Home we once all Shared, if no-one
can find it within Themselves that not one
person will survive 'less we get off this track.

We dedicate Ourselves to the further
Nurturing of our Race in Exile, We,
those who take it upon Ourselves to Free
Humanity of its worst Burden ever.

To find a way Home, to play in our role,
That, above all else, is our final goal.

A 4th nation has been discovered: Vogon!

Seriously though, I like the content and direction, but I find the 1-2-2-1 rythm to be a little jerky when spoken. It could work to music though.
Aug 18, 2004 Celkan link
I personally prefer to ignore the rhythm and pay more attention to the words. I *was* going for a sonnet though, thank you for noticing :) And yes, I did get the Vogon reference... :P

Now, some Haiku!

"To Icarus"
WAIT, Icarus, WAIT!
We are not in Dau L-10!
Shoot me there! (Sucker!)

"Ahhhh.. the Memories"
Itani, Serco,
Neutral... where did my good old
Blue, Red and Gold go?

more to come!

Bahaha.

Oh, freddled gruntbuggly
Thy micturations are to me
As plurdled gabbleblotchits on a lurgid bee.
Groop I implore thee, my foonting turlingdromes
And hooptiously drangle me with crinkly bindlewurdles,
Or I will rend thee in the gobberwarts with my blurglecruncheon,
See if I don't!

edit: I cheated. This poem, by the way, is a nice source of guildsoftware.com hostnames.

<bad>
Itani attempting to run
he fails and falls to my gun
A coward is dead and I've taken his head
I remark that this pastime is fun.

<not bad, but not good>
My ship is a Centaur in green
I'm a Serco from Sol, and I'm mean!
I sound like a jerk 'cause the sector won't work
I wish they would fix B-15!

Anaphora #1, "I Remember You"

I remember the day we met,
Your shining eyes and bright smile
Gave me a glimpse of the things
That the future might have held for us.

I remember those evenings after classes were done,
You and I seated together at a table with our things
In a pile, our notes from class becoming a mess
Of written conversations, obscuring their original purpose.

I remember that first night out,
Your hands over my eyes and ears
As we arrived at our destination,
Letting me be overwhelmed by the
Surprises you had planned for us.

I remember that first kiss,
The static discharge (damn that rug!)
A surprise to both of us,
Yet not causing you or I
To let go of the moment.

I remember the day we selected our copilots,
Your choice to work with me over your roommate
A clear indication of your distaste for outdated
Conventions and customs that had no place in your heart.

I remember those nights out in the gardens,
Staring at the stars, what a game we made
Out of making our own constellations, naming them
For things only we would ever know about.

I remember that hiking trip we took,
A week in the mountains, our meals simple yet filling;
Keeping ourselves warm by the campfire, I clearly
Recall time having stopped, your arm around my shoulder,
My head resting on yours.

I remember those good times, you and I
Inseparable as if we had been glued together,
You by my side, I by yours,
Nothing able to move us from our place.

Then I remember that day you vanished,
The days afterward full of
My messages bouncing, my calls unanswered,
I realized I had no place to turn to.

I remember crying myself to sleep every night
For a month or more, never truly giving up
On what may have been to others a lost cause;
You knew me – I never would surrender to such a thing.

I remember following any lead I could find,
Traveling anywhere, anywhen, always hoping
That I might find you there, laughing,
Enjoying the game of cat-and-mouse
That you so often played.

I remember that day someone contacted me,
They too also interested in your whereabouts.

I remember meeting with them, learning of what you had done
In the months since I had last seen you,
Spilling my guts to a complete stranger that
Somehow had a connection to you.

I remember how no more than an hour
After he and I parted, he sent me an urgent message;
A message from you.

I remember reading that message, though it wasn’t
Addressed to me directly, I read every word
Again and again, even as what I saw
Chewed up my heart and spit out the remains.

I remember that last paragraph, where you
Mentioned me, however indirectly – it was enough
To let me understand that while you weren’t near me
I still held a place in your heart.

I remember that cryptic statement,
Something about the Ides;
I checked my history and ancient languages,
And there it was, a time that you would be around.

I remember that day you so discreetly specified,
My having to go to a remote location just to
Have a direct connection to you.

I remember my frustration with your security measures,
Your password a reminder of your sometimes sarcastic wit;
I guessed “flight desk”, and I found you on the other end.

I remember getting angry, for no real reason at all,
When I talked to you that afternoon; my sadness
Boiling over into a fit of rage.

I remember your calm words in response
To my overly hostile tone;
Your gentle voice only stoking the flames
Of my anger.

I remember when your signal was cut off,
And how I wept when I realized what I had done;
I had been so angry I hadn’t been able to tell you
Those three words that never get old.

I remember your next message, your sense of humor again
Showing your peaceful intent; I focused on the words
Of the message, your voice ringing in my ears,
A welcome sound to the empty silence
That my heart had been singing for almost half a year.

I remember that urgent message two days later;
You had been captured by the Serco, your chances
Of survival slim to none; I told myself to stop
My dilly-dallying and to help rescue you from your predicament.

I remember that day I ran into you, or someone that
Looked like you; unsure, I asked your name and was
Greeted with an uncomfortable stare – I was unfamiliar
To you, you did not know me.

I remember my birthday, my first without you by my side
In several years; I pretended to understand why you
Weren’t there, but my heart refused to listen
To the lies of my mind.

I remember my efforts to find those lost memories,
Risking my life and limb for you, as you used to do for me;
My efforts were rewarded with flat refusals,
Your characteristic stubbornness getting
The best of you once again.

I remember persuading you to have an operation
So that you could remember me again without sacrificing
What you wanted; the ensuing silence from you afterward
Shattered my resolve.

I remember those nightmares, you on the operating table,
My hand holding the scalpel; my mind contorting itself
Trying to remember a procedure that I never would know,
Always ending in failure, the horror of the sight
Of your corpse second only to my leaving the operating room
To tell myself the bad news.

I remember that letter from the hospital,
Telling me what I dreaded most in the world
Had come to pass – you were gone, and nothing
In the universe could bring you back to me.

I remember my tears, my screams, my outright denial
Of what had happened, all the while it was
Tearing my heart to shreds;
The knowledge that you were still alive somewhere
Had been the only thing keeping me in even
The most melancholy of good moods.

I remember all the good times, the bad times,
And all the times in between.

I remember that I never stopped loving you,
And as I remembered that, I wondered
If you never stopped loving me.

The Ballad of LeberMac's Folly

The depths of space are cold indeed,
with nary a soul to fill them;
Serco voys pass me at full speed
and I attempt to kill them.

My shots - they land with deadly might,
but the behemoths have no cares;
Their thick armor's made of xithricite,
I should switch from neuts to flares!

So to the station dock I glide,
to load up on some ammo;
But Smittens waits for me inside, with
"Hey, you want some samo?"

"Not now!" I mutter under breath,
running for the door;
"For I go forth to deal some death!"
and launch my ship once more.

About to make the jump, the convoy's
almost sped away;
I loose my flares and they destroy,
my first kill for the day!

Their cargo floats in empty space,
alas, my hold's too small!
With another ship I will replace
so I can grab it all.

I duck inside the dock again, to
purchase me a 'moth;
But Smitttens waylays me with sales:
He's worked into a froth!

"This samo's got to go!" He cries,
"For I have no more buyers!"
I shout to him "I must claim my prize,
'fore my cargo expires!"

My behemoth leaves the docking bay
as speedy as a sloth,
I mash the turbo & rue the day
I ever popped that 'moth.

As I warp in, some Serco hoods
are checking out MY cargo;
My plan congeals, I'll grab the goods
then blow them straight to Fargo!

My ship barrels in at lightning speed
(not bad for a flying brick);
I grab my prize and whip around
Fire Weapons! ...they go <click>...

Egad! The <Out of Ammo> error!
I forgot to "[Replenish All]!"
I run from Serco hacks in terror,
Unarmed, I cannot brawl!

My massive ship is far too slow,
a-pounding does it take,
Somehow I reach 3000m and
I make my escape!

These serco fighters don't give up,
they follow to the station;
One more hit, and I'll blow up,
then I see Smittens... waitin'.

"Smittens, help me!" I scream and yell,
my cries fall on deaf ears;
Smitt's got me where he wants, and well,
paybacks' a bitch, I hear.

"I'll help you out, but you see," says Smitt,
"My assistance isn't free.
To a samo sale you must commit,
then I'll listen to your plea."

Angry Serco raced with turbo speed,
closing in for the attack;
"Agreed! I screamed in desperate need,
Now, get them off my back!"

Smitt's MSC spat rocket death
the Sercs died well that day.
I docked gently and held my breath,
"Ha HA! I got away!"

I arrived inside the bar to see 'ol Smitt
writing up my bill;
"100 cu seems enough, he said -
your debt this will fulfill."

I tore the invoice from his grip,
"10 MILLION CREDITS, what?"
"A standard order," Smitt did quip,
"Now, sucka, PAY UP."

I swiped my card and paid the bill,
now samo's in MY hold.
Smitt gave a wave and with laughter shrill,
left me poor and cold.

The depths of space are cold indeed,
when yer as poor as spit;
Never make deals in times of need,
especially with Smitt.

The End.

I remember the days
When one could get rich...
And the ores glowed brightly
In the empty cold pitch
Where the blood froze and cracked...
as charred husks floated about
And the ships captain
had not the breath to shout.
