PLEASE Give us Something to Combat Swarms better

Today I was BPing against 3 serco spammers-and-runners. Since I was using heavy ships it was nearly impossible to dodge these swarms. It should not be like this. I called one of the spammers a wuss and they challenged me to one on one, no missles or rockets. I beat them without taking any damage.

As Vendetta grows larger we will have more and more people take the easy way out of fighitng--spamming and running.

PLEASE just give us SOMETHING. Make swarms worse, or give us like a chaff (maybe something that automatically comes in heavy ships since otherwise it's nearly impossible to dodge swarms up close)

""maybe something that automatically comes in heavy ships since otherwise it's nearly impossible to dodge swarms up close""

my opinion on this is to give the ships actual roles so that a heavy ship should never want to BE up close.

After bp'ing with a bunch of itani swarmin noobs I was forced to learn how to dodge them. The trick is...... roll.

Actually its quite easy as long as your in anything besides a wraith, hog, and rag.

So don't be in those......
And spammin missile is boring...
Don't spam!
And don't run!

So, stop complaining smittens and get in something that's lighter than a tank.

/me laughs at Smitti for not wanting to leave his tank and get into something light.
/me quotes Arolte "Adapt."
Muwhahahaha doesn't it suck.

tis' called moving outta the way. get rails. YOU change to beat them, its easy. rails kill rags quickly, so do Mega Postions.

I've never felt that swarms were anywhere near uber. Quite the opposite, IMO. If they are actually effective now, I'd say that's a good thing.

So, a big heavy ship can't dodge homing missiles. Looks like we need to do something about that! (sarcasm)

Of course a big heavy rag can't dodge swarms well. How about we add missile counter measures so that every time someone shoots a missile, it will completely useless! What about regenerating shields too, so that fights will never end!

The issue is that swarms require zero skill to fire yet seem to be the bane of every heavy ship's existance.

If they were harder to use, FINE, make them as effective as you want. But as it is, people run in, unload, dance, and run out again.

Please god no. Swarms are practically the ONLY effective missiles left in the game. They can EASILY be avoided by boosting out of the way and letting the player expend all his/her missiles. They're annoying, yes, but that's how they're supposed to be. Nerfing them will make bombers even more useless.

On that note, all the other missiles in the game need to be seriously tweaked or improved somehow. Especially the Stingrays. Boosting should be required to avoid missiles. Standing completely still or pulling repetitive roll maneuvers with two fingers can get you to dodge any non-swarm missile right now. It's pretty sad.

I guess another thing I could suggest is to penalize non-BP players in a BP sector. Have the NPCs (from both sides) attack anyone who is in the BP sector but isn't taking BP. That might help improve against any outside interference. Just a suggestion.

Yeah I think smit - step outta the MSC for a coupla rounds and teach the n00bs a lesson while in a Valk or IBG Cent. Just sit behind the warp-in point and pick 'em off as they come in. Ducks on the Pond!

Just lie in wait for them like cheetahs do to gazelles. (Except these are slow, fat gazelles) If they keep coming back, good. They count as BP kills just like the bots do, and they're more fun. In fact, inexperienced pilots in Rags are EASIER to kill than the bots in Deneb.

I agree with Arolte... swarms in no way need to be nerfed. They are the only missile that doesn't make me laugh when fired at me, but they are still relatively easy to dodge if you know what to do.

I agree w/ Arolte that the swarms don't need to be nerfed, but I wouldn't say they're the ONLY effective missiles in the game. A tube of Stingrays is capable of dealing more damage than a tube of Chaos Swarms, so if you're going against a Leviathan or Queen or Frigate or such, where you're relatively positive you can hit it, the Stingrays are a better choice than swarms. For attacking any of the current player-controlled ships, yeah Stingrays are pretty useless, but is that really a problem?

I really only use swarms right now to get the other player to run. But if they are running/dodging they aren't shooting at me :) Even when I aim properly i rarely hit anything. Most (90%) of players know how to dodge them.
I don't think they should be nerfed, they barely hit anything now.

the problem isn't that they don't hit, the problem is that they're a weapon which translates to "put combat on hold until one player runs out of ammo and rearms".

this doesn't promote anything but running and counterspamming. it's dreadfully boring and from a tactical point of view it only serves as a way to buy time. I would much rather see you have to use some sort of skill to buy your buddies time, like actually engage and drive off people.

it'd be nice to see swarms have a sane counter that doesn't involve boosting into nomansland and giving up your territory.

Well PvP combat itself is pretty pointless as it is now. I don't think weapons should be "tweaked" on the basis of random combat encounters. Obviously if you fight a missile Ragnarok in a Centurion you're going to face those annoyances. But the weapons themselves are doing their jobs. That's how they're supposed to work. There's nothing wrong with them.

Suppression and supportive fire are all part of modern combat. These loadouts will serve a much greater purpose during meaningful combat missions in the future. Bombers will have their place (including missile spamming). And fighters will have their place. It's just hard to imagine any use for them now because we simply aren't up to that point yet.
Aug 11, 2005 Beolach link
Actually, if I'm in a Centurion, I can (mostly) ignore swarms & keep firing on the Rag that launched them. No, I can't ignore them entirely, and I have messed up & gone pop, but it is possible for the lighter ships to avoid missiles & still keep attacking. And I find that to be a ton of fun. Just don't let a rag get right up 20m behind you.

It's only the heavier ships that have to turbo out of the fight to avoid swarms.
Aug 11, 2005 Spellcast link
actually beo the timing of the ship firing the swarms makes a huge difference... try keeping point blank to a good heavy pilot who has swarms (most of us dont carry them because we dont think they are honorable :) ) and you arent likely to dodge very well. even gems are dangerous if "aimed" correctly.

aiming seekers means knowing WHEN to fire them, and where you are pointing when you do. pressing the fire button as fast as you can isnt very effectice, but seekers are like rails, if timed right and used precisely, they are devestating in combat. the exceptions to this are the stingray and the yellow jacket. they miss even if both people are parked and stationary.
Aug 11, 2005 Martin link
I want to see the stingrays have 4000 damage or so. Then they'd have a perfect use for queens, capships, and levis but are still almost useless against players.
Aug 11, 2005 smittens link
Like UncleDave said my main problem is that they require no skill whatsoever to use.

If the maneuverability was dropped, it seems like missles would be more like baby rockets-- you'd have to aim, not as accurately as with rockets--and then the homing capabilities would do the rest. Right now someone can jump in, hit turbo, and fire their swarms as they rush by, and contiunue to hold turbo until they're at 3000m and can jump away to reload.
Aug 11, 2005 JestatisBess link
smittens: You are right man, but if they do that the probally won't hit you. even in a hevey ship you should still be able to out run the swarms and get to 3000m. I agree they are a little anoying but they arent that dangerous.
Aug 11, 2005 Phaserlight link
I think it would be cool to see missiles that tracked only when you kept your nose pointed directly at the target. Of course, their tracking would then have to be substantially more accurate.
