fix mining

Oct 18, 2005 ananzi link
what if....

the most valuable ores were actually hard to get to?

some ores only existed in certain parts of the galaxy, and certain nations?

there were good mining missions?

yes yes yes refactor lisp etc etc etc.

i hope its refactored enough where the guides can start creating missions instead of having to wait on the gang of four.

I think pretty much everyone knows my position on mining, but in case anyone missed it, here's what I think:

Mining was the worst idea ever implemented in Vendetta. It's decimated trading and piracy with the efficiency only a "good idea" can have. If the next update permanently removed the players' ability to mine asteroids, I would honestly go and dance in the street. Well, the sidewalk anyway. Or maybe the stoplight.

I'd be more than content with changes which made mining bring in nothing much in the matter of money, with the most extreme and rare of ores bringing in no more than twenty credits per chunk.

PS: My other pet peeve is the faction system! Ask me about that ingame if you like!

Mining may not be "fun" but it DOES add content to the game. And even though YOU may not like mining I know a lot of people (well, maybe 2 or 3) that mine all the time, and would probably leave the game if it was taken out.

Besides, when crafting comes along we can actually put to use all the ore that you mine.

I'm sorry, is that supposed to make me rethink my position or something?
Really, if anything, I'd be more inclined to dance in the streets.

For some reason I've got this line in my head

"We'll go on strike!"

"Yeah that's right, you'll have a Philosopher's strike on your hands"

"Deep Thought: Who would THAT inconvenience?"

Incarnate has already posted repeatedly about how mining will mesh with crafting.

The Mission Creator will be available to the guides. We've already played with it offline and have made suggestions for improvements.

Once the new Hive code gets put in place universe-wide, my ionized ores suggestion would help to make more dangerous mining locations (ion storms) more valuable. With the old static Hive, there's too many good mining locations that can be in storms, but don't have Hive bots. Once the Hive starts moving around attempting to control as much mining territory as possible, that won't be the case anymore, as the Hive will attempt to occupy all 'roid sectors.

People! If something is unbalanced, the answer is to balance it, not to remove it from the game. If what genka says is true (and I do not necessarily agree) then the simple answer is to make trading more profitable compared to mining. Let's have some higher end, more expensive trade widgets when the economy redux comes around.

I remember how long and patiently everyone waited for mining to be implemented, please, please don't take it out.

Yah once crafting is implemented, the vaules of unrefined mined ore would be drastically reduced to what now is paid for silicate ore.

The purpose of mining then would be to implement crafting and make OTHER stuff.

So, I'm thinking that once you mine for crafting and NOT for making money, the price of raw ore should drop on its own anyway, since by then we'll have a dynamic working economy... RIGHT?

Yes, listen to the Forum Moderator. Mining is not going anywhere, and it shouldn't. I would like to suggest that, when the Hive moves galaxy-wide, it should be able to infest ALL asteroid-containing sectors (yes, even station sectors, the strike forces OUGHT to be good enough that they can destroy the observer in 12 hours), not just the labeled ones.

This suggestion is for you, Beolach:
*** Mining Ionized Ore (thanks to Beolach)
When mining in an ion storm, the additional ions increase the sensitivity of the auto-mining sensors in mining beams. As such, miners get mine “Ionized” ores during an ion storm which, when processed to the next level of regular ore, are processed at a 10% increase in efficiency. This would require the addition of the following goods to the game: Ionized Apicene Ore, Ionized Aquean Ore, Ionized Carbonic Ore, Ionized Denic Ore, Ionized Ferric Ore, Ionized Ishik Ore, Ionized Lanthanic Ore, Ionized Pentric Ore, Ionized Premium Heliocene Ore, Ionized Pyronic Ore, Ionized Silicate Ore, Ionized VanAzek Ore, Ionized Xithricite Ore.

I'm pretty sure that's the plan, at least the way I read the design wiki: http://design.vendetta-online.com/wiki/index.php?title=Hive#Hive_Outward_Conquest

thank you Forum Moderator.

You were the only person who actually replied to my point.

I am sorry I diddn't read Incarnates' crafting thread earlier. I skipped it because I figured it would be a thread just like this one. A brilliant and insightful first post followed by disrespectful silliness and meandering.
