UIT NEWS NETWORK BROADCAST

-- 1 February, 4437 --
Several trade pilots have reported sightings of the prototype Corvus Centurion Superlight operating out of the Xang Xi Automated Systems research station, Sedina II Orbital. A Xang Xi spokeswoman continued to deny any connection between Xang Xi and Corvus Prime, but declined to comment on the Superlight sighting.

Orion Heavy Manufacturing has reported heavy pirate attacks against convoys carrying ship components. An Orion spokesman confirmed this morning that the attacks are the main reason for the recent dramatic price increase of its popular Centurion Rev. C.

-- 17 February, 4437 (please, devs :)) --
Xang Xi has announced a new ship model, the Centurion Interceptor. The new ship is lightly armed, with only a single gun port, and lightly armored like all Centurions. Its speed and handling, however rival anything on the open market. Xang Xi has provided a spec sheet:

Armor: 7000
Cargo: 2
Weapons: 1s
Mass: 3200kg
Length: 10m
Thrust: 218N
Max Speed: 75 m/s
Spin Torque: 7.2 Nm
Turbo Speed: 225 m/s
Turbo Energy: 55/s

Initial reactions from reviewers have been positive, however the new ship's resemblance to an Orion Rev. C with cargo and weapon space sacrificed to larger, more efficient engines in the style of the Corvus Superlight prototype has not escaped our notice, nor has the recent increase in pirate attacks on Orion convoys.

We have dispatched investigative reporter Ekana Slank to the Sedina system to find out more. He was last seen docking at Epsilon Hold in Latos and has not been heard from since.

Another annoying fly >.>

Well, Xang Xi kind of deserves a proprietary ship variant. I kind of imagined something big, with loads of weapons, though, perhaps a ragnarok version.
Feb 12, 2009 zak.wilson link
Considering Xang Xi's suspected affiliation with Corvus, a production version of the Superlight made from stolen Rev. C parts makes perfect sense.

It makes sense for gameplay as well. Single-port ships almost never see any use in PVP, and there's nothing in greyspace that chases like a Valkyrie. This isn't quite as fast as the Valkyrie (assuming you don't load up all three ports) and it isn't as nimble as the Superlight, but it has some of the basic qualities that make both of them appealing.

Am I the only person who mis-read the reporter's name as "Elana Skank"? <_<

Goddamn you, lysdexia.

no we already have too many centurion variants, /me wants a special rag, like a half decent "light" variant take one small port off of it, shave 2k off the weight oh and up the boost thrust by 25% and slap 55 boost drain on it

can't we just fix the craptor insted
Feb 12, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
Agreed that the last thing we need is yet another fucking tin can. Modified or otherwise.
Feb 12, 2009 FistOfRage link
Good concept. This is a ship I would probably fly, though I think it should be infi boost or at most 53 drain.

Alternatives would be to make getting the superlight reasonable. For all the crap you have to accumulate to put one together, you should get half dozen. You could also significantly improve the cent 2 & 3. I would love to see these two ship beefed up.

Cent III should have two weapon ports!
Feb 13, 2009 Azumi link
How can we have too many centurion variants? At least this one stands out instead of the mk I, II and III that are just license dependent and equally not worth using once you have access to the IBG or Rev C. A new faction only ship will be welcome. Maybe then we pirates can tank our Orion and still have a cool rocketship to terrorise everybody in.

Remember to post the gun too, that is half the ship!

There, I supported it. Now strike that parking fine VPR!

btw, doesn't TGFT sell superlight kits?
Feb 13, 2009 zak.wilson link
Ok, Azumi. The gun. No more parking fine, but I still have handcuffs with your name on them.

Infiniboost at 225 with the acceleration of a light fighter would be too much. This is intended to be slightly worse than an X1 in a chase (due to the extra 200kg), assuming the X1 is very lightly armed.

What pirates in VO need is a fast medium sized assault type of ship with 3 S weapon ports and a decent cargo capacity.
Corvus marauder would be ideal for pirating IF it had better speed, thrust, spin and less power drain.

Centurion is, and will always be an Itani original design (at least if we want to stick to the backstory).
Corvus as a pirate faction can and will always ripoff other faction ships models and make a Corvus reworked model. Same situation is with Superlight.
What i do not get is why don't Itani have an IBG variant with 1s weapon port with stats better then those of Superlight?

Requirements for getting a Superlight constitute of senseless grinding (hauling vidgets and ores etc) and when you take all that in account it costs time and money like you are buying a capship and its combat ability is effectively at par with IBG.
Superlight should be available at +900 Corvus faction and cost an arm and a leg (150k cca).

Centurions like Rev c or Superlight and corvus vulturis are not pirate ships, they are PKers ships.
Normal pirate ship should be able to haul at least 20cu (or more) cargo so my suggestion is... if there is a need for a true pirate ship, lets do the similar thing to Itani centurion ripoff and make a pirate variant of Serco Prometheus mk3.

You want an ideal pirate ship that can fight, chase and haul captured cargo?
Corvus modified Prometheus mk3 is the answer.
Modifications can be substantial (removing one weapon port (no real pirate will use agt anyway) and reducing armor to make it lighter, upping top speed to 220, reducing power drain to 53/54 etc).

the Rev C is a fine pirate ship for hunting in packs. It is also a fine pirate ship for hunting alone but forces you to go back and get your moth to haul the stash.

The reason any trader should pay a pirate should not be because the pirate could steal his cargo. It should be becase the pirate threatens the trader with violence/death if he doesn't comply. That means that a pirate ship NEEDS to be a PK'er ship as well. I am in the business of extortion, not trading. Thus I prefer when the trader pays and gets away safe than when I have to kill him and go thrugh the motions of selling his crap.
=>a PK'er ship is the best pirate ship!

Regarding convoys, I do not think that any ship with 20-40 cargo will be a better pirate ship simpply because it is not going to get me the whole load. And with the amount of crap that is ferried in convoys, I often need to sell all 120 crates to make a slight profit.

True Azumi, in a sorry state VO pirate population is atm, you have no choice but to live only from extorting. Using PKer ships for that is perfectly normal.
In some future hypothetical situation when grey will be a very lucrative place for trading and mining in exotic valuable goods and ores, having a cargo hauling capable pirate assault ship would be of the utmost importance.

Sure, you can kill your trader, go back to station, get a moth, pick cargo and go back to sell it. Nobody is around anyway to chase it or to kill your moth when you get back to pick cargo.
In a populated VO grayspace (possible future) you will not be able to do it and your survival and business operation will depend on your ability to move around fast, make sudden ambushes/attacks and disappear in a thin air.
Corvus prom mk3 variant is an answer, especially if pirates will work in packs. All of them will need the ability to move fast and disappear and not just those in fast interceptors like rev c or corvus vult.
Feb 13, 2009 zak.wilson link
The Interceptor is not a pirate ship; it's an interceptor. The purpose is to run someone down and make them have a bad day. The intended market includes pirates, but it's also useful for law enforcement, mercenaries and a few military applications.

X1s are popular with pirates, used in the interceptor role. It's common for the pirate to have another pirate waiting to jump in with an armed transport (Centaur Mk. III, usually) to haul out the cargo. Xang Xi wants in on that market.
Mar 12, 2009 Dr. Lecter link
Too much of the Cent's head to head combat ability persists in a ship that has a ton of intercept capability.

Nerf its combat or nerf its ability to run up someone's tail pipe. No ship (Valk aside) should be doing both with ease.

An interceptor should be able to destroy any ship that tries to run. The interceptor should have a major problem if its target slows down, turns around, and starts shooting back. This ship would be fine, even prefer, that it have the target turn about and engage in a head to head fight.

fail

This post predates the other interceptor proposals, and is a fundamentally different ship.

Most of the later proposals have superior chase performance to anything currently available. This ship is in the same range as a Valkyrie, and is actually just a bit slower. It's absolutely intended to be dangerous in combat, but it's not overwhelmingly superior to other light fighters.

The other interceptor proposals are pirate ships. They're intended to run down loaded Centaurs that are too heavy to defend themselves. I'm not opposed to ships designed for that role, but this one is in a different category and really shouldn't be compared to those.
