Ok, here's an idea: thread sorta symlinking. As in, if someone wants to post something that should be posted in Role Playing, but they know more people read General, they could post a symlink in General to the real post in Role Playing.
The symlink wouldn't contain any text or anything of that sort, but simply redirect the user to the page requested.
To combat abuse, I have two additional specifications:
- Added to each symlink's subject would be a tag such as "[LINK]" or something, so there would be no accidental clicking on symlinks.
- Only links to other forum posts would be allowed. No goatse linking, or things like that.
What do we think?

How about instead of using [ and ] for the (limited) HTML tags, but instead, allow < and > ?
I don't understand why it has to be [ and ].

Forgive me for saying so, but, you haven't done a game update in quite a while. Why waste your time writing your own message board system when there are hundreds of full features systems already available for free? What are we paying for? I'd rather see more game content than html tags on a message board....
Which is probably why the last message board update was before Vendetta became pay-to-play.
(Which, in case you missed it, means that you are not in fact paying for any development of the message board, Mr. Angry Consumer Person.)

If it hasn't already been suggested, I would like to see a "view my posts" link. I often can't remember which threads I've posted in, so it would be nice to see if anyone has interesting things to say about my ideas.
Seconding what steelhammer requested a few pages back. Allow us to select a character name to use on the forums instead of our account names. Not only for security, but for RP and familiarity.
heavily seconded.
need to upgrade the search function a bit, I just did a search for posts that contained my user name and not one of my posts showed up that I have authored. Thats not a very good search engine. And it only displays one page of threads, what's that about, why not all that pertain to search criteria.
1 BIG suggestion. Make the cookie for this forum a session cookie. I do NOT allow permanent cookies on my PC, and I quite often delete cookies including the index.dat
Or please don't, because that'd tic me off. Really, cookies aren't out to get you. And having to relog in every day would be very annoying to me.
when there get to be 30 pages in a thread (or thereabouts) make it so that the page # link on the main forum index page automatically goes down to the next line, and not keeps going out and out forever. its beginning to stretch....
I'd like there to be some way of tracking if there were new posts to any of the forums. Just an icon that changes if a forum or a thread has new posts to it that you haven't read.
Shouldn't there be a place to see the profile info made public by a registered user? Most forums have it and it would allow you to contact people if you need to.
An example of what you might fill in when you register as public information:
AIM, MSN, ICQ, YIM, IRC, Real Name, In-Game name, PM, etc.
This has probably been suggested, but i didn't see it.

There could be an option to set the duration of the cookie.
Just to second those who have voiced similar opinions:
The two things I believe to be, by far, the most important additions to the forum is, first of all, a page with links to all threads you have posted in, and other threads you subscribe to (with, perhaps, the possibility of e-mail notifications when someone replies to a thread you subscribe to/have posted in).
And, secondly, a 'new posts since last visit' feature (could be as simple as the standard phpBB solution, where threads with new posts in them have a small 'new post' icon attached to them, or more advanced, as in a link with a number in brackets that takes you to a page that displays all threads with new posts in them).
These two options are some of the most basic forum functions, and you can find them in almost every forum system available on the net. Of course, I am a phpBB junkie, so I've never scripted other forum systems than phpBB (in where even I could add these two things, had they not been already implemented), but as common as it is, I'm sure it would be possible, and perhaps even easy, to implement.
Please, this is almost as high on my want list as some of the less important in-game changes. Keeping track of your threads now is terribly difficult, and using the forum is, really, a pain. A shame, because I love discussing VO ;-)

I'll second my own opinion here. Please, excuse the cheek, but this is something I *really* miss with this forum system:
I've just begun frequenting these forums, and only after a few posts, it's getting really, really hard to keep track of my own posts. Please, forum dev, add a way for us to keep track of our posts! Anything from e-mail notifications upon replies, to a subscription page where we can view the threads we have started/replied to. This is the only thing that stands in the way of me (and possibly others as well) enjoying VO discussions to the fullest.

Let's let him finish his currently assigned forum tasks first. :P

A note to what johnhawl said about the search thing...
It looks at the content of the posts so that unless you actually sign your posts with your name you aren't going to find them. You'll find posts where people (other people) use your name, though, which I find more useful.
