The Goliath.

Let's have a chat about what we hope Goliath will be. Me I'm personally hoping for a shielded hauler with around 600cu of cargo space, one cap turret and four regular 'ole turrets. I'm hoping that this will be a good ship in its own right and not a "sub dent"
Let's also avoid the "Soon tm" joke, I think we can give them the benefit of the doubt on this one.

As long as one of the turrets is on the back, the single most important place to have a turret, It'll be a marked improvement over the Trident's armaments.

I'd love someone to explain why the tridents turrets are such useless places.

Turrets are a physical entity in their own right, and it is hard to place them on surfaces that are not totally flat. For example, if you tried to place one on the bottom of a Ragnarok, the ship would kill itself anytime it flies forwards due to the collision mesh's over-lapping. Either that or it would stick out of the bottom of the ship with a stupid look.

Same with the rear of the Trident, there really is nowhere to place one without issues.

I covered this in-depth, years ago. The thread got shitposted and I don't think the devs really took any notice.

Anyway, There is ample room on the rear of the Trident for a turret. Moving the upper-aft turret to this location would also eliminate the common problem of swarm missiles triggering on ships that're entering or leaving the dock when fired. (NPC Tridents are especially bad about this!)

The Ragnarok, as yoda mentioned is a different story since it's a much smaller ship, though turret shots don't trigger on their parent ship, so it won't kill itself.

For the Goliath, I think having two on the top right and left angled panels and one on the lower aft angled portion facing backwards would work well. Other useful locations could be above or below the engine bank like on the Constellation. Probably one on the big, flat front side of it, unless it has some forward-facing weapons we don't know about.

I'll mark up the dev photo when I get a chance for clarity. It would be nice to see some size scale or comparison with another ship to get an idea of how big this thing is.

Actually, the devs did notice, but it requires re-exporting the mesh and pushing it to all platforms, and ended up being slated for "the next time we update the Trident".. which, at the time, was not expected to be years away.

There is a Goliath scale image in the newsletter.

So when can we expect some news on the Goliath? Eli would like something to shut down his speculation gland and I'm 90% sure that you have something other than a picture to show the bloodthirsty sark mob that is Vendetta Online.

Ya just know I want a mining version....

MMMMMM Denic!

Thanks ARF, I would still want a dent to have a turret that can fire directly to the rear.

Thanks for saying something about it now.

Derp, yeah there is. Sorry about that.

So it's big enough that small turrets aren't going to be a huge polyp sticking up off of the hull like the larger ones on convoy Tridents!

does anyone else think that this is coming in 1.9? Other than a pretty picture and "Goliath assets added for future debut" I don't have much to judge this by. It can be either mouth watering bait. a long term goal announced too early or the developers finally ending the "Soon™" joke. If it is truly the latter can we expect a sassy GIF of incarnate giving us the middle finger? We may know nothing yet...

(Edited on 28/10/16: I've seen the Goliath with my own eyes and I'm pretty sure we can expect that sassy GIF)

As for turret placement, the Tridents lack of a rear facing turret was bad but in the same breathe you have to admit that the Trident Type M is the perfect imperfection as far as Ships, in general, are concerned. I think we all pine for access to a variety Capital ships and the existence of even one makes Vendetta Online a great Sci-fi MMORPG considering its development and slow progress. "Space Quake" As it was called is now evolving and I'm fucking ecstatic at the prospect, Either way, I've already said too much and anyone who knows me knows that I am already overly vocal on this subject.

/me shuts up

Why would you name a cargo freighter after the goliath cannons in the backstory?

If those things in the front of the ship are not cargo crates, they look like one big ass plasma cannon. Vendetta's version of the BFG. Long Live Space Quake!

I just hope we get some capital ship pursuit related add ons to inspire renewed combat. Otherwise this thing will just end up being a high-end uber moth that nobody can kill.

I think all we can do is wait and see what it will be. I engaged in like 10 discussion already about what the Goliath might be or what its stats might be. A lot of cool things were said. But in the end we'll have to wait. I really hope it's not gonna take long this time. Heh.

I already alluded to this in the newsletter thread, but it bears repeating here:

Cargo hold capacities for existing capital ships are ridiculously tiny. Combat ships like the HAC, Teradon, and to a lesser extent the Trident can sort of justify this, but mammoth bulk transports like the Constellation carrying less cargo than a mere eight Behemoth XCs strains belief. We ought to be seeing some economies of scale here.

Therefore, as the smallest capital ship and explicitly a freighter, I believe that the Goliath should have a minimum cargo capacity of 1,500cu, while the Connie itself has it's own hold size increased by an order of magnitude to 15,000cu.

vIsitor: I'll totally agree with this if we finally turn the Trident into more of a combat ship. Often I get asked by newbies how many weapon ports the Trident has. When I tell them all it has is one large port... ugh.
