sarahanne, have you actually tried playing? It might be a good to give it a try if you haven't. Work through the short tutorial and then post with some question, observations, what have you. We'll *try* to keep it on topic but no guarantees (^.^)

There are plenty of other things, besides FPS, to do here at the moment. There are cargo runs and trading missions. You could make a list of bots in the unaligned systems but I've got that covered. you can just fly around admiring the view, chat in-game with people from all over the world or, our main objective, ferret out those pasky bugs and make suggestions for better game play that would make the release come sooner.
The best thing in this game at the moment are the people that will drop what they are doing to give a person they don't know all the help they need to get started and to learn the little nuances of the engine.
One very important thing you could do is tell everyone to concentrate on getting all of us right-side up so everything that belongs on the left are no longer on the right!

:-D :-D :-D :-D :-D (one for each Dev and a spare to use for newcomers!)

Well, with the release date apporaching I'm wondering what the response to the game will be. Of course I think the game is great but I'm married to one of the developers (that can bias your opinion). Seeing other's feedback is very informative.

I've set up an account and I've played around a bit. I like the graphics and I did enjoy personalizing the color of the racing stripe on my 1st ship (woo hoo!).

I haven't been on-line during "peak" hours so I've been the only person in my nation and one of less than 10 on-line. Most of the channel 100 chats were about invisible bots...

p.s. RelayeR, When I proudly procliamed to Ray that I finally docked my ship with out bumping into the station first but that I entered the bay upside-down, he retorted that in space there is no upside-down. I think that means that you're always right-side up!

I agree, in space, there is no upside-down but in Vendetta, there is. Next time I see you or Ray in-game, I'll show you that there is an upside down.

cant the stations be upside down?
Aug 31, 2004 Durgia link
Well the words on some stations are a dead give away. Of course not everybody can read those.

hmm are there still words on stations or did they remove that when the new universe was made. I cannot remember lol.

So you cannot really be upside down, and neither can the stations since they are in space, but if you dock upside down compared to the station you may find it difficult to walk:P

upside down adv : in an inverted manner.

Come in-game and find me, I'll prove it.

So once you instantly walk into a station, gravity is turned on? lol, no :P. Thats one thing that will make realistic FPS interaction in stations impossible, unless they wear magnetic shoes or something.. The only place with (a sense of) gravity are those spinny wheels.

Society that harnessed gauss technology, tachyons, gravitons (!) and several other sci-fi "technologies" can be expected to use these gravitons or whatever to create artificial gravity in their stations, don't you think?
Sep 01, 2004 toshiro link
indeed, since they made non-newtonian drives that suggest we are able to create gravity pulls at beck and call.

And what are those "spinny wheels" then? Space Theme Parks? Industrial strength Space Mixers?

sarahanne: The large docks (the irregularly-shaped hexagonal ones) actually have nothing to do with the orientation of the station. It's the various signage on and around the stations that (usually) determines "up" or "down" on any particular one of them. This is because if you learn to read the lettering, (GTS, or Galactic Trade Standard) jokingly called Waylonics after its creator (ask him for the story of its deciphering) you should notice that it usually is oriented in one direction on any given station, regardless of the docking bays, which could be oriented in any number of ways. (In the itani and serco systems there are a few stations where the docks are at 60 or even 90 degrees from the plane of the station!) Personally I like to dock with the lights on the "top" side of the dock underneath me like runway lights when I can do it without going against the orientation of the signage.

And mr_spuck: the wheels are habitats where people live.

The wheels are a lot of fun if you have a bus and good timing.

Fly into any sector with a planet or a planet in an adjacent sector. Stop your ship. "turn" your ship so you are looking at the sun. Where is the planet...on your left? The map shows it on your right. If it's on your right, the map will show it on your left.

"Rotate" your ship 180 degrees. NOW, everything in the sector is correctly depicted on the map and, you ARE NO LONGER upside down.

RelayeR, we know that. I was talking about relative to the station. She said she went in the dock upside down, so I was trying to point out there is no upside down when you're talking about the docks. With the skybox, yeah, there is. I've seen it too.

RelayeR, what if the system map was a bottom-up view, like looking up from beneath a glass table? o.0
Sep 01, 2004 Celkan link
I think a dev said that "up" was out of the screen and "down" was into the screen, if you wanted to look at it that way. Oh. yes. it was Waylon.
Sep 01, 2004 danielky link
I know RelayeR is leading the crusade to prove what direction is "up", but can we please drop the subject? I think Role-Playing or Off-topic would be a good place for this if it has to go on.

I am delighted that the "upside down" debate rages on. It's the kind of attention to detail I enjoy. First, RelayeR is entirely correct. Secondly, it does not matter. Lastly, the map should probably be flipped or we are going to be hearing about this forever.

One of the amusements of watching beginner navigators is that when we turn the ship South they all want to turn the chart upside down. They get a rap on the knuckles with the parallel rule. We all want the frame of reference to be "our" frame of reference, i.e. since I see that island to MY left it should be on the left on the chart. This only results in disorientation, the trick is to place yourself in the larger static frame so that you see your position relative to your navigation, not your navigation relative to you.

But it's a moot point. Much as I would like to see it, I doubt we will be doing any proper navigation in Vendetta. "Man the scuppers! Full speed abeam!"

(Oh wait.. we can do full speed abeam. Never mind.)

I'm with danielky on this one.
