/me things G5 should be renamed "iRule"

Note that it doesnt say what it runs at, I could prolly find a dozen PC's that run faster :P

1.6
1.8
*duel 2.0
* is it duel or dual?
and within twelve months ibm will be pumping out 3.0
(in ghz)

And humpy, www.apple.com/powermac/ it gives you LOADS of information on the powermacs

Read before you *try* to impress us. ;-P

Within 12 months, AMD will be pumping out 5 Ghz 64-bit Athlons. So?

BTW: Their facts are wrong. It says "The world's first 64-bit processor". Well, the Itanium and AMD's server chip don't count now?
Jun 23, 2003 furball link
LMAO and you forget HP, Sun, and a number of OTHER computer manufactures who've made 64 bit chips. Sorry folks, 64 is passe now.
Jun 24, 2003 dragos link
Erg, rogue, they say the worlds first 64-bit personal computer.. which unless you are using a server as your personal computer, is in fact.. true(fur, the HP and sun are server chipsets too, so no need to jump down my throat on that one, and the Sun's that are 64-bit are workstations, or servers. and I know the HP is server)

In reality, the statement is entirely correct.

Also you forget that speed comparisions between the two arcitectures isnt exactly even. same with AMD vs intel, the speed it operates can be faster then the comparable speed on another chip

My dual G4(867, mirrored drive bay) running win 2k on virtualPC can outbench a 2ghz pentium(yes, ive run them side by side, onlything pentium beats me in is some low level system stuff) and thats with my G4 running win2k under emulation.

My G3/350 beats a 800 pentium3 running win98 under emulation.

and SL, its dual
Jun 24, 2003 genka link
They had benchmarks at the keynote, the dual-prossesor (2ghz)G5 beat a 3.06ghz dual Xeon. So hah.
http://www.apple.com/powermac/performance/

Plus, if I can ever afford one (it could happen.. it's only 3k after all...) I could put in up to 8gb memmory. :P

And the bus speed! The bus speed! It scares me...
Jun 24, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
8 gigs of memory for the low low price of 3750!
Apple and there stupid over priced ram!
Mmm, you can never have enough ram.

And those of you dissing the speeds of the ppc 970, this is a major jump from the 1.42 ghz maximum speed of the g4 to the low end powermac 1.6 g5 speed, apple just gaind 600 mhz in there computer, and are adding on to it.

The bus speed, jeeze, 1ghz per processor.

Ahh i'm drooling again!
SL changes into a non drool soaked shirt.

And yes rogue, read up on the subject before you try to prove them wrong
The world's first 64-bit PERSONAL computer.
Does it say server any where in there?
Jun 24, 2003 WatercooledCT link
Uh oh, bad news Apple users, apparently results have been manipulated:
http://www.haxial.com/spls-soapbox/apple-powermac-G5/

I still think I want a G5, but I'm not happy about being mis-guided.
Same thing with the new nVidia cards, it's been proved that nVidia has been altering it's results. It doesn't make it a bad card, just not something a reputable company should be doing.
Jun 24, 2003 roguelazer link
Ha ha. Your $2700 computer is slower than someone else's $2000 computer. The Athlon-64 will make MINCEMEAT of your PPC970

I still want one.
heh, people are losing sight of the idea that we can no longer process information as fast as a pc can spit it out.
maybe in the future when certain apps will need more processing power, but at this time, I can run a complex game and only use 20% of my Processor
Jun 24, 2003 genka link
Keep dreaming rogue, it's good for your health. :-D

Watercooled, I'd hold my anger untill we get more info, after reading through that "article" I'm rather spectical. Wait. Someone's gonna write a follow-up sooner or later.
Jun 24, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
I love that guy's flame mail!
<insert kind disagreeing email here>
<insert jack ass reply here>

Oh oh, go to the store, click on the powermac g5 and look at were the leaked specs appeared last thursday

The specs for the g5 in that area are the g4's spec image.

Apple has been flubbing up lately...
Jun 24, 2003 dragos link
Sigh, when will people learn about benchmarking

EVERY processor manufacture/computer maker skews results if possible, for instance on the photoshop tests, it took advantage of altivec on the mac(G4) back when those were done.. however, I will point out from that article, that his results are also skewed, where at times, apple used the same setting for both machines, rather then using the lower one for the G5 and the higher one for the dell(in the FPU area), causing a much higher result.

Rogue, my 1756$ G4 already makes mincement of 3000$ windows machines at this point, running benchmarks optimized for running on the competing machine and I'm running windows under emulation. Granted, I can't hold up against that same hardware running linux and me running linux under emulation, although I come in a close second when running a PPC version of linux. It is VERY hard to do fair benchmarks across operating systems and processor architecture.

No one I know of, has ever been able to do a cross platform/architecture benchmark that is fair to all parties. For instance when I test mine against windows machines to show doubting friends, my mac is at the disadvantage of running windows under emulation, or the results would be better(they still seem to think that a dual Xmhz process equals X+X mhz)

Forum Moderator, you may want to lock this thread before it becomes an all out platform war. It most likely is only going to degrade from this point(and most likely I will be the guilty party involved)
Jun 24, 2003 WatercooledCT link
Dragos, trying to get the last word and then get the fourm locked huh? :-p
no one is being negative.
I brought up the whole thing about misleading data and still said I would kill to get a G5. :)

the ONE thing I wish apple would do is stop the whole propietary hardware thing.

People can go to newegg.com and build a pc from scratch, I would kill to custom build a G5.
hell, I would kill to get a G4 case and build a PC inside of it.
Jun 24, 2003 Suicidal Lemming link
i want to buy 2 g5 powermacs full blown and rip them apart and stick them on the inside of my wall, then mount a plasma screen on my wall.
(one power mac for doing something, maybe folding, the other for games)
Jun 24, 2003 dragos link
No, I wasn't. However seeing as how I've seen even friendly bouts like this, disolve into platform wars time after time(admittedly after awhile I have trouble controlling myself). However, you and me waercooled, aren't the only ones posting, and I'll quote:

"Ha ha. Your $2700 computer is slower than someone else's $2000 computer. The Athlon-64 will make MINCEMEAT of your PPC970"

/me shrugs

/me stops posting in this thread now.

"the ONE thing I wish apple would do is stop the whole propietary hardware thing."

And lose all their profit margin? I don't think so. Apple can't survive off software alone, they NEED proprietary hardware, it's what keeps them alive.
Jun 25, 2003 Rabid Panda link
Besides, Cisco came out with the first 64 bit processor, and the concept of dual AGP ports to make 128mb graphics cards. Represent yo.

Grim> Not just Photoshop but Mathematica too.

SL> IBM made the G5 chip, not Apple's usual Motorola.

Fur> Sun only works on Sun boards and Sun boards only work on Sun monitors, and I don't know to many games that run on Solaris boxes do you? Thought not.

WatercooledCT> Try rendering a desktop sized 3D picture in Maya, then you'll see why people need processor power.

roguelazer> 2000? for what kinda machine? I can build a gaming machine with only 500 bucks. I don't know why or HOW you could spend 2000 bucks on a machine, but okie, have fun wasting money. Also, from biggest to smallest bandwidth it's IBM (just now due to the G5 chipset), Motorola (G4 and G3 chipsets), AMD, Intel. That's for personal home/office/gaming computers. I don't know the server ones, I would imagine that it's Sun due to hardware compatibility.
