it would be totally cool to have grouping in common military hierarchy
numbers slightly adjusted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Military_organization#Air_forces

/wing 2-4 groups = 32-640 pilots (we can dream of the day 640 people log on at once...)
/group 2-4 squadrons = 16-160 pilots
/squadron 2-4 flights = 8-40 pilots
/flight 2 sections = 4-10 pilots
/section 2-5 pilots (so a trident and 4 pilots could fit a section)

so once a section reaches 4 pilots it has the option to transform into a flight, once it reached 8 it has the option to transform into a squadron. Squadron leaders could administer who is in which flight or section. You could either continue building up from the bottom, or a Squadron Leader could /group invite "Other Squadron Leader" and a group leader /wing invite "Other Group Leader"

In this fantasia, you could easily choose which level to address in chat, both text or voice, so a squadron or flight could chat amongst themselves until orders came down from group or wing command...

but for the short term, it would be cool to allow 16 or 20 players into groups as they stand now. Devs put in HUD stuff for large voy and skirmish groups in preparation for larger player groups, but that has sat for a while now. Might have to be a 1.9 thing ;)

+1 CD. *if* 640 (say for a NW) people were all in the same group, coordination would be incredibly horrible, vc would be pure noise, and this system would definitely come in handy. Also, I believe it should be easier to implement, which adds to its charm.

this is pure dreaming for a larger player base, but it almost makes me want to suggest a comm officer. Or at least options for chat restrictions: only flight leaders can talk at squadron and group level, only squadron leaders and above can talk at wing level, etc. so orders filter down the chain of command. if the current flight or squadron leader logs off, the next in charge automatically gains access, etc etc....

I just want to be able to tell the newbies in the group "Shoot anything that isn't a white dot on the radar" without having them tear up teammates #9 and #10 for a few minutes while we explain why they're part of the group but not part of the group...

This has not been forgotten, however , we are busy porting this game to the Gameboy, Cybiko, and the Sega Genesis.

Dude, I have a Sega Genesis! Will it work on both 1st and 2nd gens? What about through the 32X expansion?

I'd rather see a Game Gear port than a Game Boy.

As for fancy groups, sure do that stuff someday. But in the meantime, just up the friggin' limit already!

10 would be a good number.

Then, when they implement meta-groups or....."raid groups" as some of us know them, we'll have an even 40 people.
