We should be welcoming new players, not bashing them.

I would second the comments made by Armonia, Atice and Roda.

However, until the faction system is adjusted along more rational lines I fear we will be stuck with noob griefing by the few . No amount of persuading them not to do it will ever get through.

I'm starting to realize why everyone has so many kills.
Nov 11, 2009 LeberMac link
how u get killz?
Nov 11, 2009 Roda Slane link
I did not get all my kills from hunting newbs! I got all my kills from defending myself against clm, itan, pa, vpr, and um... oh my... so I guess I did get all my kills from newbs. *sigh*

But I didn't station kill them! Except at corvus stations I guess... *sigh*

But I don't pirate! I just take the loot from those that war me and offer to let them pass for a small... *sigh*

To hell with it! Kill the freaking newbs!

That's the most animated tone I've seen in Roda's writing in ... well ... ever.

I think one of the problems here is the attitude that some of the 'vet' members have - i.e. that if they take a disliking to someone, then they can say/do what they want to them. Or worse than that, they think they have some kind of 'right' to do so. On every decent game/forum/site I have visited, there are rules of conduct. Trolling on forums, for example, usually results in a ban. Shouting down a new player simply because they don't know the game too well, isn't normally onsidered 'ok'.

Here it is apparently acceptable to be a complete cock. Which means you get a lot of them cluttering up the boards with bile. It's not suprising to me that newer players find this off putting.

The bottom line is, you shouldn't be able to be a complete asshole to other people, without repercussions. At the moment, you can (as is evidenced by some of the sadly notorious people I have encountered already).

Quite right, Restayvien. However, I hope you remembered to wear your flame retardant britches ;-)

I was idly surfing round the forums of a future MMO prospect the other day and I actually saw a troll get admonished by a moderator for being nasty and then subsequently apologise. It'll never catch on.

It's kind of both, in my opinion. We have some vets who get away with way too much (at least on the forums), and we have some newbies who get excessively uptight over basic gameplay and then irritate said vets. The former could be greatly improved by having better game and forum administration tools (something that's been ticketed for years.. blah). I used to be more proactive on the forum behaviour, but I think I've become a bit jaded, aside from not having a lot of time for forum-management stuff. The latter (newbie attitudes) could really be helped by having a more delineated nation-to-grayspace transition, with licenses keeping people in nation space until Combat 3 or so, and something of a "ABANDON ALL HOPE YE WHO.. <blah blah>" entry to grayspace, at least for first-timers (as has been discussed on Suggestions). This is also planned. I did get as far as keeping people from killing newbies in Training sectors, and shoring up nation space a bit. We'll get the rest of the way.. but this week we're doing stuff like PayPal and YouTube and promos, oh my.

And that's the other big reason, we (the devs) keep having some other pressing stuff take our time from this sort of development. There isn't enough of us to go around, but.. at least we have a plan!

when i started this thread i really was mainly talking about the forums, what happens in game is a totally different story. yea, you were pirated, deal with it. but sometimes these forums can get quite nasty, that's where the moderation needs to happen. don't get me wrong, i dont think anyone here is a "cock", they just like to get their point across in a nasty way, which needs to chill a little bit.

Inc: now that i think of it, you could just put a warning when leaving nation space for lvl 4's and lower right?

"BE CAUTIOUS: YOU ARE LEAVING YOUR NATION'S PROTECTED SPACE. OUT IN GREY SPACE YOU WILL ENCOUNTER PIRATES AND OTHER DANGEROUS, AND QUITE RUDE PLAYERS. BE SURE YOU ARE PREPARED."

having that (or something of the like) at all wh's leaving nation space would be a good thing right? even if they see it every time they leave until combat 5. kinda like the EULA (seeing it all the time) or the Be Nice section of the forums.

More forum moderation means we need more forum moderators... I mean, can't really be done anyway else.

As per the off-topic in-game bashing... once we have interactive NPC's, I'm sure one's near the grey boarder will do a great job warning players via PM of the dangers lurking on the other side of the WH (and probably also telling wild stories of the profit that can be had!). In the meantime, I think I may have just stumbled upon a great PCC idea. /me travels over to their forum now.

the problem with adding more forum mods is the community is very polarized atm. traders hate everything the pirates say automatically and vice versa. It'd bear near impossible to find a forum mod that wouldn't cause one hell of an uproar in one group or another.
Nov 12, 2009 diqrtvpe link
Anyone who would moderate something someone said because they disagreed with it rather than because what was said was vitriolic and mean-spirited would probably have proven their unsuitability by now. Even-handedness and an ability to put personal feelings aside are (in my view) the main qualifications for the job, and it's impossible to pick someone that someone won't hate (if they don't hate them before they're a mod, someone will sure as hell hate them afterwards!).

move all the defense guns to inside the nation space.
have a strike force on gaurd 24/7 inside nation space.
have strike force warn all would be exiters that there is a pirate on the other side of the wormhole.
have a neon skull and crossbone sign at the wormhole.
have one (auto respawn) npc pirate (corvus maud, n2, fc) on other side of worm hole.

When a newb in an ec-89 fails to escape the npc about three times, he will get a clue. traders will know that they need at least minimal armament or an escort to get a trade ship past.

have the pirate ignore anyone with more than 500 pks except when they are in a moth.
