We should be welcoming new players, not bashing them.

I vote for a BIG WARNING not preventing newbies from visiting grey space.

"Trespassers will be shot. Survivors will be shot again."

That one posted by Armonia looks good and scary enough.

If something is implemented as per Armonia's big caps warning message, I suggest changing "PLAYERS" to "PILOTS". This is more cohesive with role playing.

But otherwise, I think a message like this if implemented cleanly, would be a positive addition.

no we shoudn't bash noobs, but blasting them is another story, specially annoying noobs.

Lets bash vets that never play anymore and cannot defend themselves instead!

Furball was a bastard for killing me a lot in 2003!

Blaster yelled at me in 2003 and it was mean!

Icarus always used to blow me up and it made me mad!

Phoenix was the devil!

rg10: right on.

I could certainly moderate more aggressively. Incarnate and I would need to discuss parameters, since I do take my cues from him.
More tools would be quite helpful, as would having at least another mod who could be on when I'm at work.

Sure you could. And then we could all be bored to tears, when we're not tearing our hair out from reading post after post begotten from unchecked ignorance and laziness.

If the Devs and/or Whistler want to lower the collective IQ of forum participants by banning me for saying things that frequently garner "I hate to say this, but I agree with Lecter" type statements, they can knock themselves out.
Nov 12, 2009 Aticephyr link
Lecter, I'm sure you can figure out a way to say what you need to say without being a complete and utter d-bag. If you can't, then obviously your IQ is lower than you think.

Being a douchebag makes the world go round

put your head into the sand and hope nobody sees you

Let's not confuse what I can do and what I will do, Atice. In any event, I'm against both bashing noobs and suffering fools; when those two categories overlap, my priority is the latter.

"have a neon skull and crossbone sign at the wormhole."

I like this.

"I hate to say this, but I agree with Lecter"

Haha, I often wanted to say this but only because of others people feelings so I did not. The fact is that I usually have to agree with his opinions however they are said. I understand that many could feel his style offensive but he often really makes me laugh. Since he is pretty consistent in his style I think no one should feel offended. Just take it easy ...

Seriously, if newbies are running out of the game I bet it is not because of his posts. If we want to talk about newbies quitting we should think of something else than Lecter ...

... so back on topic:

"pilots" - definitely better
Skull and bones - well yeah!

the important point was the npc pirate waiting on the other side of the wormhole.

player pirates just don't have time to sit and wait at every grey space wormhole 24/7 for the next idiot ec89. a single npc pirate is practically no threat to any one that has any business being in grey. even a level 1 centurion would be likely to outrun an npc pirate. but that is the point. if a newb can't outrun or outgun a single npc pirate, they should not be allowed into grey.

As for moderating the forums, I don't see the problem. Nazi moderation will garner far greater complaints than the conservative minimalistic type moderation I have observed practiced here. I rarely if ever see a post which absolutely demands to be moderated.

Is lecter a jerk? hell yes. and that adds character to the forums. is impavid an idiot? hell yes...character..bla bla

welcome to vo

We should have a big white space whale that enters random sectors and kills everything in it, or takes your leg... Depending on your Space Whale faction.
Unkillable, but that shouldn't stop people from trying... ooh no they will want revenge, revenge!!!

It would not do to just put a leash on the more outspoken people on the boards (and certainly not only one person, that would be a singularly myopic course of action). Yes, there is a code of conduct for the forums, but in my opinion, that goes both ways. To cite the oft-used example of the EVN, they have boards, too. Back when EVN was still of minty freshness, there was a lot of shit hitting the fan, and the mods modded quite well (IMO), in both directions. That means that simple newb-bashing was penalized (through a debatable karma point system. Among other things), but simply being a n00b (or n00bish troll, or variations/combinations thereof) was penalized as well, by the mods.

I agree that, if such a 'filter function' were to be implemented, it'd take more manpower. Somehow, the additional guides (some have/had FM powers) gravitated away from VO and its forums, or I just don't see them and their actions anymore...

But then, there's the problem with limited resources, so it's not possible. We'll just have to limp on until it is.

The links Dr. Lecter posted on the first page on this thread are perfect examples of why I stopped playing Vendetta -- both in-game and on these forums, the game is dominated by asshats, and the developers/moderators do nothing about it.

Don't complain about lack of paying subscribers when you do your best to drive them away. Contrary to what Roda Slane believes, most people who have a job and a credit card do not want to spend their evening in the company of obnoxious, foulmouthed schoolchildren.

"...both in-game and on these forums, the game is dominated by asshats, and the developers/moderators do nothing about it."

Did you read the rest of the thread? Most players are very cool, and many have posted here. The game is NOT dominated by asshats. Some of the asshats are quite vocal, but they remain the minority.

I'm interested in the fact that you would write such an inflammatory post in a thread that supports the viewpoint you claim to have, particularly given that you state that you no longer "play" in these forums. Do you expect to receive anything but flames in response to such provocation? One might easily regard you as a troll in your own right.

If you have a problem with a "Traders we shouldn't ask for money because they won't pay" thread, you're way too Goddamn sensitive to be allowed any unsupervised contact with the outside world, much less play something called Vendetta Online.
