Having been asked to produce expertise on the cloning of organisms, allow me to add the following article to prove that the clones of Ms Miharu Kanaka-rhapsody are more than mere copies, but actually additional instances of her personality.

The following is my intellectual property. You are free to use it, but if you do, please quote the source, i.e. me.

Begin transmission from the Serco Public Library Archives

Treatise on the cloning and karmatronic signature transfer of cell-based organisms.

By mifune toshiro kanchou,
head of the Department of Medical Robotics Advancement Research (MedRAR)
at the First University of Serco Prime/Terra II, on the 13th of March, 4434.

In medias res.

To produce an exact clone of an original is easier than generally assumed, since it involves
very little effort. In layman’s terms, you scan the host body and print it out again. The
mechanism itself is rather complex, involving a hierarchic system of nanomachines that
have different abilities. Allow me to give you a simplified rundown of them and their workings.

First off, there are the basic tissue surveyors. They have the ability to analyze tissue down
to their molecular structure, using a mixture of electromagnetic, sonic and tactile analysis.
This process is stressful to the tissue and cannot be repeated indefinitely without inflicting
temporary and sometimes permanent damage to the host. Every single result is being relayed
to a server that collects, classifies and files the incoming data. Since their individual
data buffer is minuscule, the stream of information is very diffuse. This requires the process
to take place in a shielded tank and is very sensitive to electromagnetic radiation of
any kind, since the technology used to transmit the information is based on it. The surveyors
are chemically inert and of a size so small, they can easily float around inside the synaptic gap.

This concludes the fist step, namely the ‘scanning’ of the original entity. After that, you
have a multidimensional image of an entity, but it is fixed in time, and it takes time to conduct
the analysis, usually a week. To prevent extreme distortions, this process is only administered
when the patient is not growing significantly anymore, that is to say that, for example,
humans of the age of 0 to 18 are not allowed to undergo the process.

Once the information is compiled, Assembler type nanomachines can create a copy of the
entity in relatively little time (again, about a week). The order of restoration is as follows:
nervous system, including the eyes and the brain, skeleton, internal organs, muscular tissue,
external organs (excluding the eyes). During this time, the copy has to be suspended
in a sterile nutritional solution, preferrably in space, sufficiently far from planetary or stellar
objects to reduce gravitational stress on the patient.

This leaves us with an exact copy of the host body, incapable of living. Were such a clone
to be brought to life, it would revert to a coma almost immediately, as a means of preserving
its life, gradually absorbing information during the comatose phase. Experiments have
been conducted, and clones have been successfully brought to full capacity, however the
cost exceeds the gain by far, and thus this is not a valid alternative to normal reproduction,
as refined by natural evolution.

OOC:
In the following, I will refer to what constitutes a person in my personal opinion by means
of calling it a soul. Please note that this does not make me religious in any way, it just
proves that up to this point, humanity still does not know what this soul exactly is. I see it
as a mixture of genetic disposition, experience, and, most importantly, perception of relations,
by the person of her/his surroundings, and by the surroundings of the person.
:OOC

Now that we have this body, it can be suspended in stasis nearly without limits. Once it is
brought around to room temperature, it decays rapidly, much like a normal corpse.
The problem is now to transfer the soul itself. This is done using the wave aspect of karmatronic
radiation. Explaining karmatronic mechanics in-depth would go beyond the scope
of this treatise. In short, karmatronic signatures are imprints left by living entities on objects
and other entities. You affect yourself, and your surroundings. Your neighbor affects her or
himself and his surroundings, including you. The intensity of karmatronic waves degrades
much like magnetic and electrostatic intensity, with r^2.

The nanomachines used to capture and relay these signatures only have sensory equipment
for said waves, and can also transmit only this information. Thus, they occupy even
less space than the aforementioned surveyor and assembler constructs and can easily
pass through every obstacle in the human body. Like the surveyors, they relay the collected
information to a server for classification and filing.

After this comes the most delicate part of the entire process, namely the imprint of the
aforementioned signature onto the clone body. Using the almost exact reverse process of
the karmatronic scan, the signature will be transferred. Since there are no karmatronically
neutral materials, there is usually an indelible amount of noise created every time you
‘write’ onto a new ‘empty shell’. This noise stems form the surrounding shielding, which
has received karmatronic imprints and also emits karmatronic waves.

Once the write process has been completed, the cloned person is in a very unstable state,
and should be brought round as soon as possible since the dangers of the instance awakening
on her or his own in the solution and suffocating are noticeable. To envive the instance,
it is rarely necessary to employ more than the use of a stimulant drug. Cases that
required defibrillation are less than 4% of the sum of test cases.

Given the fact that information collection is never complete, the cloned and activated body
will also receive a certain amount of surveyor and karmatronic sensor nanomachines, to
ensure the continuous collection of data, as well as an emergency supply of disposer
nanomachines, to ensure the destruction of the instance in case of over-aging or capture.

Trauma induced from the process can be minimized, and thus the newly created ‘copy’ is
indeed more than just a copy, rather another instance of the same person, which is in fact
the purpose of the entire matter. Due to varying local legislation, it is possible to limit the
amount of instances in service to any given integer. This can only be done once, however,
since after setting it for a first time, the nanomachines’ settings cannot be changed. To
change the number of instances, the current nanomachines have to be extracted from the
patient and a new set has to be brought into the metabolism.

To activate any of the nanomachines mentioned, it is sufficient to induce a potential in the
nanomachines, by ways of electromagnetic waves. These waves have to correspond to a
specific pattern of frequencies, unique to every single set of nanomachines, which in itself
constitutes user identification.

OOC:
This way, sniffing is possible, but I really don’t see any other way. Suggestions welcome!

Um, why would human cloning discussion in VO would still be at the "Dolly" (current RL) level when we're able to create advanced stuff like Guises? It is obvious that by now we're way way WAY beyond that.
Mar 13, 2006 toshiro link
Guises and clones are two inherently different things. It is not a matter of advancement in technology, it is a matter of field of research.

Neat article regarding the possibilities of online justice systems and self-regulation of members in the latest Discover Magazine, April 2006 issue. (It's not online yet, maybe next week.)
It talks about the MMOG "Second Life" and how they handle "lawbreakers". They have a nice cornfield that offenders are banished to. Perhaps we could have a banishment sector. Heh.
Mar 13, 2006 MSKanaka link
There are currently three methods of "punishment" for "lawbreakers" in VO (Guides, please correct me if I'm missing something or something's incorrect):

- Muting, which can either be caused by a dev/guide or 30 /vote mute "player name" entries from seperate accounts.
- Banning, which can only be caused by a dev or guide.
- Chat-banishment, which can only be caused by a dev or guide, and entails preventing the player in question from chatting in any CommNet channel other than 666.

The curious thing about that cornfield is that it was just a rumor until a prisoner "leaked" the piccies.

And toshiro, both guises and cloning means genetics, and I daresay guise research started as a spinoff of cloning once it was perfected. Again, the background says we're way too advance in genetics to still have silly discussions on whether a clone is a person or not. Of course, the matter cropped up coz Mogul wanted to stand by his wayward guildmate, but since this is an RP exercise it would be nice if in the matter of technological advancement we were all on the same page.
Mar 13, 2006 toshiro link
Granted, jex. I should have said 'instances' instead of 'clones' in my reply to your post. Because clones are just that, copies, whereas instances are actual extensions of the original person. And this can't be achieved by genetic engineering. I suggest you re-read the second half of my article, including the first OOC comment.

On a sidenote, Miharu, why did you list punishments that are clearly non-RP punishments? In the case at hand, it would seem to me that those would not be approriate.
Mar 13, 2006 Dr. Lecter link
Probably b/c this thread is an off topic mess.
Mar 13, 2006 MSKanaka link
Hence the quotemarks around "punishments" and "lawbreakers". I gave those because the context was punishments dealt out by the "justice" system inherent in VO--of which there is pretty much nothing.

You want RP punishments? Well, I guess locking yourself out of factions whose standings can't be repaired is one. Getting huge bounties on your head would be another. In the case of guilds, not policing your own members and gathering a nasty reputation despite the niceness of the law-abiding members would be another. (Yes, I'm talking about SCAR.)

But to tell the absolute truth, there *are* no RP-based punishments in VO.
Mar 13, 2006 jexkerome link
I consider being called "Aroltemort" an RP punishment. Right, zamzx?

Re: Lecter trial to return to the agenda

People,

because of the recent (and foiled) Serco attack and invasion into Itan territories, the process of selecting a jury panel and final deliberation in the Lecter trial affair had been suspended for security reasons.

With the recent threat now evidently just a PR coup, the judicial process is to resume this week.

The panel of judges will be announced this tuesday (the 21st) and deliberation should be done by Saturday (the 25th). Verdict will be given within 24hs of final deliberation.

Also, I will return to power as Commander of ITAN as soon as Yasumoto relinquishes command.
