Sorry to say that, but you have no idea what you are talking about.
PHPBB is the oldest, most widespread, performant & probably one of the most secure (untill you start messing with too many addons) forum system.
I know PHPBB from my first-hand experience, and i have never had any problem with any soft of hacking on my forum. And as I said in some other topic, the portal we are talking about has 35,000,000 views monthly, so it's not some teenager's blog.
Another argument is that it DOES NOT have to be PHPBB. Any php forum will do. But i would suggest PHPBB as it has the most extensions, pretty advanced builtin features and will probably cause the least problems.

Sorry to say that, but you have no idea what you are talking about.

But you are customizing it. You would be creating more incremental work for someone who would have to update the forum code every time a new version was released. So much code complexity means more security holes (in theory) and security patches are much more important.

Seriously dude. Since they already have support for tags, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to just add a quote tag, a code tag, and maybe a list tag, than to replace the entire forum system.

No colorful assortment of IM icons and karma icons and other such fluff. No ability to post in silly colors or frilly unreadable fonts. Just a nice clean minimalist forum.

Didn't I say that i would configure PHPBB so it would work **EXACTLY** as this forum does, including CSS/Graphical layout ? Oh, wait - I did.
"Cleanness" of this forum is a matter of few simple configuration options - like turning off signatures, trivia, joined date, location etc. No icons - matter of simple Skin/CSS/HTML. And you will have a powerful & performant forum engine underneath with all the advanced options avaiable if needed.
BTW.
The mere fact that most of you are even discussing the NEED of upgrading of the forum system means that you have no idea how today's internet works. Internet has gone forward, while this forum system is standing still.

This is a matter of civilizational progress. It is hard to even to **start describing how many BASIC functionalities this forum is lacking**.

And once we determine that they don't belong in off topic... they should be placed in funny quotes, where they do so desperately belong!
point of order Ryan, in order for him to be featured in funny quotes we need an original place for him to be quoted from.
I think the only solution here is for PoL to build his own forum and for us to visit it and collect the best quotes to go on this one.
